Broken Smartphone Screen
« on: 22 September 2018, 21:11:18 »

Has anyone on here got experience of replacing the glass on a Samsung Galaxy S5?

I imagine that it is one of those tasks that is fairly straightforward once you have done a couple.....

Is it worth it on an S5? Not much more to bin it and get S6?

I own an S5. It still works. I have a new screen glass waiting to be fitted.

How much will an S6 cost me? Is the S6 the one that isn't splash/water proof?

If you are doing it yourself, get a good set of tools for the small screws, screen puller and other useful things like tweezers, connector plastic spatula etc and watch several youtube videos. For multiple connectors make a careful note of the connector order and make sure that the screen reassemble order is setup correctly.

If the glass has to be separated from the screen & touch sensor where they are glued/screwed together, the tape with supplied with the Chinese pattern part will be a poor substitute, which is why I prefer to use a slightly more expensive complete screen assembly.

Thanks Rods
I have tools (and the screen came with a selection ). I didn't buy a complete screen and sensor assembly for the reason aluded to by Tunnie.

The bit I expect to have most trouble with is separating the broken glass from the screen and sensor.

If yours came from egay etc, the "free" tools probably aren't up to the job tbh.

A back street market trader might be best bet, but I bet they will use complete assembly, not just glass.

I've replaced a few Samsung screens. Not too bad a job if you're careful. Certainly worth getting a new one off Ebay and giving it a go. :y

The later ones are a bit like later gayphone screens, where the glass, digitiser and lcd are all glue together, not like the earlier type whey its one unit.

Its this type that I personally struggle with, as trying to remove smashed glass that's glue to the digitiser is quite challenging ;D. Or I never figured out the knack ;D.

You've reminded me, my stupid gayPhone needs a new battery...    ...fortunately, due to crApples shinanigans with "battery optimisation" (ie, crippling performance) on tired batteries, they will do it for £25.  Now a decent battery is £15 (I'll ignore the really crappy £5 from egay with tools type batts ;D)….    ...decisions, decisions...  ...for the sake of a tenner, can I be arsed to do it.  Obviously, the flip side is can I be arsed to a) go to Central Milton Keynes, b) deal with the groats at crApple.

with ref to a) and b) though, this stupid, gay, useless £3k CrapBook has the well documented keyboard issues, and as work bought it, I feel I should be able to get it sorted in works time :). And I could get the gayPhone sorted at the same time.

Yes, I think that's the type I've come across. A bit of heat from SWMBO's hair dryer did the trick in getting them to separate, for me at any rate.

.. and, of course you'll get the battery and DIY. I can't see you lasting 5 minutes at a "genius bar" without being escorted from the premises (as I would be, in fairness). ;)

Last time I was there was getting the screen replaced on her gayPhone (also glued glass on digitiser, but the digitiser and LCD were also damaged), because genuine crApple was something like £65 and el-cheapo chinky LCD was £60 plus delivery.  It was actually a surprisingly hassle free experience...

...however, best not mention the previous experience when I dared turn up to the shop to buy something without an appointment...

Do you know anyone off to Asia in the not so distant future (Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, India etc), they have some amazing ability to repair these screens or other Mobile issues for peanuts, as for the glued Front screens they have a special Hot Wire machine that separates the glass from the digitizer, worth a shot in the dark and could be worth asking around.  :-\

a) go to Central Milton Keynes,

Has the advantage that you can visit Yo Sushi at the same time.

Well .. I consider that an advantage, anyway ;D
