I've never bothered with winter tyres even on the Tata, which has 510 BHP and 500 lb ft torque.

I wouldn't drive it in snow anyway. :)

Very sensible, Opti  :y
There are those who would say that taking a powerful, tail-happy car out in the snow was great fun, but I think that maybe 510bhp is a tad too much to be messing around with......on a road, anyway.

Grip isn't great on anything less than temperatures that 'melt tarmac'.........this is why the new BMW M5 and Mercedes E63 are all wheel drive.

In that case you may as well put cheap ditchfinders on it then and really make life more interesting.  :)

She is currently shod with Michelin Pilot Sport MP4S which get good reviews. I like it best with the ESP partially disabled, in Trac DSC. This allow a fair bit of 'slip' although supposedly not enough to put you in a hedge. That's the theory anyway. :)

I'm having bridgestone BLIZZAK REVO1 put on steelies for Mrs builder this week
few reasons ,
the car has a space saver ,i want a proper spare in it,
I have said winter tyres anyway  :)
it's fitted with £40 a corner rubber(new recently by previous owner) that i've not heard of ,though i should google and see if they are any good  ;D
Mrs Builder Thinks she's a trained racing driver  ::) which she isn't  ;D

If you had a car with different sized tyres &/or rims front and back would you want to carry two spares?

My Smart Roadster has different rims front & back ... same sized tyres
My Smart Fortwo 451 has both different  rims & different sized tyres front & back ..... neither has a spare.

If need be yes , but that is not the case on any of the fleet (corsas ,astras, zafira )
the only car that won't have a size matched spare is my omega (spare is a 195/65/15 ) but if ever i have to fit that , I WILL remember and drive appropriately .
I can't 100% guarantee the rest of the family would remember too :( in the lesser cars IF a skinny 50 mph  :-\ rated space saver was fitted ,   ::)  it solves the problem of me having to get the punctured tyre replaced PDQ ,  :y
