GPS week rollover
« on: 13 February 2019, 17:53:55 »

Not sure how this has passed me by, esp in a professional capacity, but its unclear if it will impact satnav?  All sites seem to regurgitate the same US government bumpth.

TomTom state it will impact many of their older units, but very little else.

I wonder how the NCDC will deal :(

And for all those who say Google Maps works for you, I'm glad. Even if you're wrong.

Guessing everything factory-fit prior to a certain date is about to stop working.

Say goodbye to your NCDC, TB. Time to buy a new TomTom  :P

Yes, no worries there. The chances of it surviving until a GPS week rollover I'd regard as "minimal". ;D

Wonder what'll happen to my Rockwell Jupiter? ;D
Then again, I only use it as a frequency reference, so not bothered where or when it thinks it is.

And me.
But using a 25 year old factory system? It's a nice curiosity now, not a tool.

I really like the fact my car has an original and working satnav, even if it is years out of date. I will be pissed off if it stops working.
Sad I know, but I cant help it.  ::)

The NCDC units were crap anyway, in my view.

CD would constantly be spat out in morning, due to condensation the the disc. The maps were very old, to the verge of being pointless. They don’t take full postcode, often struggled with industrial estates or where no traditional road/number.

Waze on the other hand, start app, says are you going home? Tap go and boom, multiple options based on live traffic data and dynamic routing updating as you go, based on traffic. Not once has it given me issues in position/routing.

Ah sat nav.

Went across country the other day toMarket Harborough. Wasnt familiar with the way. First thing. I thought was odd was we arrived at Countesthorpe which is quite near Leicester. No matter. Plugged on. Declned two gated roads as it was raining a lot.

In the old days you would have had a look at a map and then remembered the key villages/ junctions.

Ours surprised me today by saying use M1 and M62 to get the M6 for Scotland. I ignored that and went M1 A50. Still had miles of 50 mph withno onedoing any work apart from one man raking a bank the other side of the Armco.

To be clear - we don't know that. We're just winding TheBoy up ;)

It's possible. On the other hand, maybe they had the foresight to allow for it when the firmware was written, 15-20 years ago? I guess we'll find out in April, if TheBoy pulls half his dash out and throws it out of the pram window, like he does with his TomToms ;)

Fingers crossed it still works then,as spent quite a lot of effort, and that of others, last year getting mine back working.

Accept its an out of date old system but its built into the car and if it was designed to work its nice to keep it functioning.Use it very infrequently but surprising just how accurate it is accepting for the discs being some 8 years old now....agree also it does get spat out some mornings ,which I hadn't appreciated was likely to be condensation
