Water beds
« on: 03 March 2019, 10:33:33 »

We were talking about the craze for water beds back in the 80’s.

Best thing since sliced bread for bad backs, marital err harmony and restful nights......

Never slept on one but some friends had one for a few years back then.

Anyone got one now or know of someone with one or any anecdotes?

A mate of mine who always had to have the latest gimmicks decided to get one ... not cheap .... had it installed and told everyone how good it was ... went away on a five day rotation to Germany (we were both Flight Engineers in the RAF) and came back to find the block his 3rd floor flat was in all boarded up .... yup .... the floor was unable to take the weight and had collapsed, taking out both floors below with much mess and lots of water .... very luckily the occupants of the lower flats were unhurt .. but that was pure luck !!  :(

It cost him even more after that as his insurance refused to pay out, he ended up with a mahoosive mortage and owned the whole block, which took about 5 years  to be made habitable again !! (mostly as he had so little money to pay for anything to be done !)

I seem to recall an episode of Steptoe and Son where Harold bought a bed because he he thought it would help him 'pull a bird'

.........then his old man deliberately had an accident with a sharp pair of scissors.

The girl ended up extremely wet, but not in the way Harold had hoped. ;)

We have one
Super king size (British Waterbed Company made) soft side, hydro-bed with 90% motionless mattress
you spend 1/3 of your life in bed ,so getting a good bed is important IMHO
cheap water beds are probably rubbish ,we did have 50% motionless to start with but the mattress needs replacing at about 5 years (to avoid the risk of the vinyl  getting old ,leaking) ,so we upgraded to 90% motionless when the first matress reached end of life (it's now a cover for the in-laws trailer  ;D)
(motionless : there are fiber baffle sections to stop "waves" ,cheap mattress has no baffles and is just a bag of water ,90% motionless (mudbed)has lots of baffle material , so if the other occupant turns over , you don't feel it, remain un-disturbed  :y)
in a superking there is probably 1000 liters of water (with conditioner mixed in)
so a metric ton (2,205 lb). but that is evenly distributed through the base over a 4 square meter area  :y
under the mattress , is a heater that controls the tempreture of the water by thermostat (so set to your desired setting and leave) bed will be at the perfect tempreture all the time, in summer, turn the heater off and the water drops to ambient room temp (so keeps the bed cool ) fantastic  :)

should you stick a knife  :o or other sharp item through the 3 layers of vinyl which is pretty tough , the water would be contained by the liner

soft sided : large ring beam of foam around the edge of the bed ,rather than a wooden frame ,so sitting on the side of the bed is not sitting on a plank  :y

cost  (bearing in mind that I am a tight git  ;D ) £2000  :o
matress covers £90, new mattress thick end of £450 every 5 years, conditioner £20 p/a (you should drain and refill yearly)

best bed , most comfortable , I have ever slept in . the cat spends most it's life on it  ::)
would I recommend a water bed  :-\ absolutely , IF your prepared to spend the money on a decent one , and prepared to service it yearly, be careful what sharp things you take to bed  :y

I await the p155 takes  ;D

dave, that is interesting about yours. It is quite easy to spend more on a conventional bed than your water bed cost especially with the change of mattress every eight years rule of thumb.

I knew about the heater side of them but didn't appreciate the need to change the water each year. For some bedroom situations I would imagine that being a trial.

I would not fancy keeping a mattress for 8 years myself (not after seeing close up photography of dust mites and the like  ???
a water bed mattress can be wiped over being vinyl ,removing all dust etc . (so good if you have allergies ) material mattresses can be turned and hoovered  but my mattress cover gets washed in the machine like a sheet on a regular basis .

There is a plastic/rubber bung and screw cap, stuff in a hose pipe and siphon water out the window, down the stairs to sink or where ever  :y
I have Koi carp ,so have spare electric water pumps that i can use to empty mine (pumped to the en suite bog), refill with a hose pipe , add conditioner, burp air bubbles out . job jobbed for another year  :y
probably takes the same amount of time that a good hoovering would take (apart from the filling up of water part ,which is only as fast as your tap  ;D)

Probably too much of a faf "trial" for most people ,

i'm not a water bed salesman , just trying to give an insight being a water bed user  :y

I dare say you could probably buy a new Ikea* mattress ?  :-\ for £110 and swap it every year   :-\

Ikea * an example , I don't have a clue what they cost  ;)

That is some house with Koi carp and a bog. Do you have problems with damp? ::)

When we visited Scarborough recently the bed mattress at family was so firm as to be 10 on firmness where a wooden board would be 9, so we bought a king size mattress " middle of the road" for £399 rather than stay in a hotel. I have seen them for £2000

No damp issues in the house  :y the "bog" is just a toilet  ;D
the kio live in a purpose built insulated shed ,in a pond ,heated ,so it does get condensation on the windows in winter  :( there is a watertight porthole door that I open into an outside pond ,for summer ,so the kio can swim outside too .
expensive pets  ::) cheap to buy but they eat expensive food and treats like prawns, muscles, mealworms, chicken strips etc  ;D not including the cost of pumping 6000 liters of heated water around every hour 24/7 through expensive filtration systems  ::)
When we visited Scarborough recently the bed mattress at family was so firm as to be 10 on firmness where a wooden board would be 9, so we bought a king size mattress " middle of the road" for £399 rather than stay in a hotel. I have seen them for £2000
So £450 for a waterbed mattress and £100 on conditioner over 5 years is probably not considered expensive then  :)
