2.5 exhaust maifold to cat section gasket

This car is due MOT soon. Last two tests it has struggled to pass emissions test. Left hand catalyst section rattles all the while, cat matrix probably broken. I have bought a cheap cat secttion in case I need it. Shall I also need a new gasket, if so is above the one?

That is extremely expensive when any local factor will have the same part for pennies. And you'll be able to check it's the correct size before you buy the thing.

the cast manifolds have a counterbore for that type of seal. Which is an ordinary part and available anywhere once the size has been established.

I stand corrected then, the 3.2 uses a flange gasket that bolts through  ;)

when you have 3.2 manifolds with 3.0l downpipes you use one of each type of gasket. The rings are a bit fiddly to position while you tighten the bolts.

The flange gaskets are also readily available from lots of sources.

I used 2,, of the 3.0L gaskets and some silicon, when I fitted 3.0L downpipes on my 3.2....

Terry just reuse the old ones with a smear of fire gum on both sides.

I have now removed the LH cat section. The gasket was a flat disc. However, the two nuts holding cat to manifold were different, one 15mm hexagon, the other 16mm. I guess it's been off before. This car spent some years in Portugal, which may explain it. I approached my local factor, he brought to his sceen pic of exhaust spares for V828KOV, and up popped a flat gasket with 2 holes for the bolts. The manifold is not countersunk bored. He can get one by 3pm, I said that would do.

Collected gasket at 4.30, in an envelope marked Mondeo; bit too big, will need filing, but will do the job. It cost £4.20.

Given the potential ballache of removing rusty downpipe nuts on what is now a very aging car, I think £10 is peanuts for a genuine gasket, for refitting.

The genuine gaskets last 150,000+ miles easily. They’re metal, and durable.

Many of the pattern ones are cheap composite material and last no time at all.

If it starts blowing in a few weeks / months, you’re likely to think “I wish I spent that extra fiver on a Vx part, rather than having to crawl under here again :y

Having re read your post, if the gasket is too big - don’t fit it. Chalk it down to the perils of pattern parts / small parts shops, and spend a tenner on the right one. You’ll do the job once, and properly, then.

I can’t see any Ford mondeo gaskets ever being compatible with a v6 omega :y

Heat downpipe nuts until cherry red, undo, also while downpipes off, drill out flanges on exhaust end, get x4 M10 nuts n spring washers, and x4 m8x50 bolts n nuts  refit with old gaskets and smear with fire cement,, job jobbed.

Thanks for the advice James. This morning I visited my local Vauxhll dealer and asked for the gasket. None in stock, he made three phone calls, none in the country, get one by Tuesday, he said. Too late, I said, MOT booked for Monday. So, with misgivings, I fitted the gasket I had.

The gasket that came off looked just like the gasket offered on the internet in my first post. I should have bought it!
