Oil leak
« on: 13 July 2006, 15:12:09 »

Hey,  picked my motor up today after it had the auto selector switch replaced on warranty - all good so far!

Now I know my meega has had a minor oil leak for a while & put it on the to do list....!

The mechanic said the leak prolly contributed to the selector switch fault due to oil contamination & when asked what he thought may be leaking he said might be 'a union loose near the oil cooler' although he admitted that was a guess cause I wasn't paying him to diagnose it!!

Having investigated as far as I can without dismantling anything I can see oil running down the rear right hand side of the engine (as you look at car from front). The leak is not major but appears constant if  you know wat I mean. The left hand side of the engine looks clean.

Havin been an avid reader of oil threads I was thinking maybe the leak could be the rear of the rocker cover gaskets going? (though plug wells look okay ) Is the oil cooler located in this area? Any ideas?

Possibly what he said, but that would be oil under pump pressure so I would expect to see a good spray at the rear of the bulkhead.....plus often topping up the oil!!

My money would be on possibly the old rocker cover and gasket problem :)

Not sure what the gaskets are like on the v6 rocker cover but on the 2litre there are two half circles towards the back of the cover perhaps if the same, one of those the join has deteriorated.

To check if rocker gaskets, plug the plug leads. Any oil in plug wells well be give away. Failed rocker gaskets usually sign of blocker breathers.

Has it got any history of an oil cooler change?

Thanks for the replies!

No,no history of oil cooler change - car has FVSH/last serviced dec '05. Is the oil cooler near this location above?

I thought the same bout the 'union loose' bit that there would have been a more drastic leak.

If it is the rockers it must be right at rear of engine.

I have only ever seen the unions loose after oil cooler removal and hence the question.

Cam cover gaskets is the favourite.
