I took the idle control valve off my project car the other day with Jamie, just got back to putting it on last night.

Gave it a bit of clean with Carb cleaner (not the best job but i was tired)

Anyway bodged it back on, connected everything up and started it up. The ticking noise seamed to be quite a bit quieter...



There still seams to be a strong ticking noise comming from the back of the engine, and some from the idle control Value but not as much now.

It seams to be noisest between 1,000 rpm & 2,500 rpm  Once reving it hard above 3k the noise seams to go...

When the engine is on idle, it also seams to be a lot less noisey.

Any thoughts? - Can the idle control Value generate a lot of noise if its nakered??

I still think your ticking is coming from manifold or its heatshield...

I got the wooden end of a broom stick, and poked that down at the heat sheild above the right hand side manifold. Did't seam to affect the ticking

Manifold every time in my experience!
 
It makes the sort of tap that's really difficult to diagnose where it's coming from!
 
Unfortunatly is a bar-steward of a job to do on the V6, 1) due to lack of working space and 2) due to the studs being prone to snapping.
 
Correctly speaking you need to remove the LH cylinder head, or the engine, to change that manifold gasket. Although Mark has a sneaky way of tilting over the Engine....
 
Make sure it's not your Air-injection pipes leaking - mine were on my old Elite - causing a god-awful tapping noise.
 
Otherwise, on Laidback's advice - I've been living with it!  
 
Admittedly though, I'm not so concerned because I'm not planning to sell the car!

Humm although it can be done, the cost would be too high...   - As I would still like to sell it

Bugger indeed Jamie! could not have put it better my self.. i pushed it right down and pinned the back part of the heatshield down.

I think a trip to ATS and a "Quote to fix it" might be in order...

False hope, trying to grab onto anything other than the exhaust Manifold  

Going to give the idle control value another clean tomorrow, as it definalty made a differnce cleaning it with that carb cleaner....

If you do it Marks way, by tilting the engine over, then a manifold gasket change would be peanuts - a few quid for the gaskets. The only cost is your time...

Also before doing anything drastic,, check the downpipe to manifold joins. One of my V6's was once blowing on one of them, making a loud "tap".  

If it's one of those you're on a winner - they're very easily accesssed from underneith the car with a (very) long extension bar and socket, and I believe a copper gasket. A bit of fire-past on the join works wonders, but DONT overdo it!!

I should have written "Manifold gasket every time"....

A gasket changed has worked for me more than once...

interesting, I must confess I have not had it jacked up yet  

Did't realise manifold gaskets were that cheap!  

Cheers for that m8, i'll get it jacked up and check it out...

Good Luck if you do find its the gasket my one was a pain to do but worth it in the long run.

I've got a small blow causing a tap on my LH manifold, but it's only when cold and goes away when warm - so far I haven't been ARSED to change it

I must confess, I have done just the same....

It's not a Job I'm looking forward too, and I know it has to be done.
But for the short term is it ok to drive around like that?
