AUTO GEARBOX
« on: 26 September 2006, 18:22:38 »

HI GUYS, I AM A NEWBIE TO THE SITE, ALWAYS USE VAUX MECHANIC FORUM.
I OWN A 2001 Y REG 2.2 CDi OMEGA AUTOMATIC.

I HAVE A SPURIOUS FAULT WITH THE BOX, 95% OF TIME CAR DRIVES FINE, OCCASIONALLY THE CAR GOES INTO LIMP HOME MODE.

I BOUGHT A CODE SCOUT DIAGNOSTIC CODE READER, ONLY FAULT PRESENT IS P1700 - TRANSMISSION CONTROL UNIT, OCASSIONALLY P0700 IS PRESENT.

HAD OIL PRESSURE SWITCH CHANGED LAST YEAR AT GEARBOX UK, THEY SAID BOX WAS MECHANICALLY SOUND - TORQUE CONVERTER SOUND ETC.

COULD THIS BE OIL & FILTER REQD OR COULD IT BE A FAULTY TRANSMISSION ECU ?

I AM IN NOTTS AREA IF ANYONE NEEDS CODES READING - EMAIL JONNY27WAKEY@AOL.COM

Likely candidates are oil/filter, or the selector switch (does the little lights by gear lever always light up as expected (eg D, N, R etc))?

Is that it won't let you select sports when in limp home (normal) or at any time (fault)

It won't let me select sports mode when fault on, when playing up I use 1,2,3,D when changing from 1 to 2 the car judders.

Car been driving fantastic today, spent £430 on it at weekend, new timing belt & tensioners, new 4 electrode bosch plugs, oil and filter, new auxhillary belt and a new tensioner, 2 new front tyres and two front track rod ends!

I would probably change oil/filter and see what happens then.  Can your code reader do a live data view, as that may help...

This sounds almost excatly like the fault on mine.....except when i read the code its the same as yours plus i get cam sensor.....

When it does it on mine.....my meegas in limp mode...same as yours....jerking when you select gears manually...no sports mode and in 3rd gear all the time

If AA where here he would shout CAM SENSOR.....which i might think is the same prob as yours

Worth a try first...and cheaper  ;)

Are you reading gearbox fault codes, or just engine codes, as I cannot find either of the codes mentioned earlier against gearbox - I think they are engine ecu codes....

They will be engine ecu codes.....same codes as mine brings up (except i get cam sensor as well)
Im pretty certain AA said his flagged up gearbox fault codes as well before his cam sensor was changed.

If the car's done more than about 80K, and/or it's been worked hard, it's worth changing the oil and filter anyway.

Mine had exactly the same problem.  'Automatic gearbox' warning on TID and limp home mode.
New oil and filter cured it.  (VX dealer wanted to carry out £200 'diagnostic' and change ECU!).

I'd go with oil change, if that doesn't cure it, read codes from gearbox ECU (probably need a better code reader)

The sensible thing to do is a gearbox oil change and filter clean/repalce as a starting point.

The box will benefit from this anyway and it is known to cause these type of sysmptoms.
