Fitting MID into police spec 2001 MV6 (facelift)
« on: 17 July 2006, 12:53:59 »

Hi guys,

First post here so be gentle!

I have a 2001 ex-police MV6 which contary to much opinion, is a great car and mechanically expetionally good.  Being ex-plod, the information display is the most basic or basic and looks horrid in a car with so many toys!  Since having the car, I've fitted an as-new elite leather interior, replaced all of the dash panels with original MV6 silver panels, added all of the extra buttons (including reconnecting the traction control) and now want to move my attentions to the information display.  So, how easy is this to do?  Will swapping out the existing display for a MID simply work or does it need Tech2 trickery... of course, next question after this is going to be how easy is it to add additional functionability to cater for the new MID (crusie, washer/oil level warnings, bulb check, fuel computer etc etc), but we'll save that for another day  ;)

Thanks!

Welcome :D

Adding the Fuel Computer and Check Control stuff would be a nightmare. I don't think MID needs to be programmed to radio like the GID and CID do.

No Tech2 - we like the sound of that!!

I don't mind too much the idea of a nightmare as am reasonably good with getting things done, managed to swap out the exhaust manifold gasket and auxillary drive belt tensioners yesterday afternoon, local Vx wanted best part of a grand and 2 days to do it - daylight robbery.  My main concerns are knowing exactly what I need to fit and where.  Certainly there are a few 'loose' plugs under the bonnet which seem like they want to be plugging into a missing ECU or suchlike, also, near the washer bottle etc etc.  Guess I am not so bothered about having all functionability, I do regular light checks etc myself so don't mind if things like that don't work.  fuel computer would be good though..... my main reasons for wanting the MID is cosmetic, the dash looks 'lacking' with the basic half display.

To be honest I am surprised its not already a MID as mine is.......

The key thing to look at is the number of wires to the grey rear connector, if its MID enabled then pretty much all the pins are connected.

I'm just assuming that I am not being a numb nuts here, the display I have only has matrix display on the top half, the bottom half is standard warning lights, for example when firing her up, the headlamp levelling light illuminates for a few seconds.

The MID is the full display as I used to have in my pre-facelift elite.

Correct?

Correct.

Yours sounds like TID (triple info display), just shows radio, time, and temp.

Thats right, all in the top section - so, do you think a MID install would be trouble free?

Not something I've ever seen done, wouldn't like to comment. I would have thought it would be OK...

If you can cope without check control it might well be quite easy and check control is easy to disable.....

Theya re cheap enough, I paid £5995 for mine a few years back, but that was from a specialist forecourt (http://www.expolicecarcentre.com), but I regularly see them go through fleabay for sub £2000, though usually automatics.

I love the manual box, really mates man and machine properly, especially when you re-enable the TC switch which the police tend to physcially isolate in behind the dash...

I'll let you know hwo I get on. I have a monochrome display for an NCDC 2013 that I am going to try in my polac.

That has a fuel computer and check control on it.
