Volvo V70
« on: 12 January 2019, 14:20:42 »

I'm looking around for a big estate and quite fancy a V70.  There are loads about and lots with 200,000+ mileages still commanding good prices  :)

I'm just wondering what the experience here is of them and what they are like to live with?  ???   I think Baza has one?  :-\

FWD in such a big car for example?  :-\

It sounds as though your confidence  in the German derv has taken a beating. :-\

I think few manufactures do 'big practical estates' better than the Scandinavians. :y

It will be terminally dull though. :-X

Yes I do a lot of miles in it and often late at night to avoid the traffic and I guess at 20 years and 142,000 miles things are going to start to go wrong.  :-\

I was less than a mile from home the other night when I had to call out the breakdown crew, so I was able to walk home and have a cuppa!  :y  I don't fancy sitting on a mountain backroad somewhere in Wales at midnight in February waiting for the tow truck.  ::)

I do like the BMW though, it's got planty of grunt and the RWD power delivery makes it fun to drive.  :y

Quandry is the best description of my thoughts at the moment!  ::)

Could you be tempted by an Omega estate?

Problem is, even the youngest will be older than Moses. :'(

I put 50,000 odd miles on my S80 D5 in 18 months without any issue. The only thing I had to buy other than routine maintenance items was a brake pressure switch, £18 second hand off eBay and a seized rear caliper (£70 ish)

For me it's the most comfortable car I've owned, or been driven in for that matter. Returned 45mpg day in day out and easily over 50 on a steady run.

Mine was a D5 163 Euro 3, specifically selected as it lacks DPF. The only downer is the euro3 was 5 speed only, making it noisy at 80+ mph, so I've heard anyway.

I found it easy to work on and would heartily recommend it. It is dull though.

Oh, and all S80/v70s got a folding passenger seat as standard. Great for carrying lengths of stuff.

My V70 is what's known as a Phase 1[built up to 2000 I believe]they'll carry slightly less than the earlier 7/8/9 series cars, but still a respectable amount.I find it very comfortable. The front wheel drive layout doesn't bother me as I don't really notice a difference in normal day to day driving. All[except possibly the much newer versions]got the 5 cylinder-ex Audi/VW?-engine even the diesels in a variety of power outputs. The petrols were 140[mine],170 in n/a guise and the T5/T5R at 200+ bhp, diesels were 163 and 185bhp I believe. All had DMFs but the autos gained a reputation as being a bit flaky[don't know how deserved that is as mine is a manual.I think they're pretty good on fuel for what they are.Would I have another? Well while I'd sooner have a S80 because I prefer saloons yes I'd have no qualms about having another V70.In the roughly two and a half years I've had mine I've spent approx.£350 on it and that includes 4 tyres. As others have said not the most inspiring drive but then that's not what it's for.

Things I quite like about the V70.

Cavernous interior, fold flat passenger seat (Didn't know that. Thanks Jimmy!), they're fairly low so easier to chuck ladders on the roof rack, comfortable, reasonably powerful yet economical, loads of them about so I'd imagine spares are cheap, and the fact that there are loads about with 200k+ mileages gives me confidence to buy one with 140-150k with good history and at the right price.  :y

Things I don't like about the V70.

Volvo must have sourced the dash from Ikea.  :-X,  FWD, dull as dishwater.  ::)

I guess I'll have to go and try one out.  :y

Probably a tad more expensive than a ten year old Volvo.

Try and get black/silver plastic if you can. The wooden ones are eeeeven worse! They're are head not a heart purchase for sure!

Btw, forgot to say, mine was P2, which covers circa 01-05. If you get down the road a bit and decide on a D5, there is a bit of research to be done as to distinguishing 185 and 163 bhp ones - it's not totally straightforward l, particularly as the outward signs were down to badging, which can be changed quite cheaply  :-X

In any event, they can all be safely remapped to at least 200bhp and 320 ft lbs. Doesn't make them any more fun, just better at overtaking!

Yes I think it would have to be the D5 185 and auto if poss, but not essential.  :)

I like the idea of the remap!  :y

If looking at an auto try to find out if/when the 'box fluid was changed, they take different[more expensive] fluid to the Dexron stuff the Omega uses.Rear suspension should be self levelling using Nivomat dampers which are expensive but owners on the forum say they can safely be changed in ones as opposed to in pairs,or of course like the Omega can be changed to "ordinary" dampers and springs.XC70 while essentially the same car sits higher and is the AWD version.

Not really, as long as you’re willing to travel there are plenty of XC70s - mostly in Scotland  ;)

Ahh. Essentially the same car though, just the XC version has more rugged looking bumpers etc

As is always the case, they’ve mostly been to the moon and back at least once ::)

Thar do 8)

I was watching a manual D5 AWD V70 of '55 vintage on ebay a while back, went for about £350 with a gear selector issue... They're rare, but more common than FWD XC70s, which also exist, although most of these are the 2.0 diseasal ;)

AWD S80 is a very rare beast, but could be worth seeking out for a best of both car 8) again more likely to be plod or v8  :D

FTFY LD.  :)

I find the fact that there are so many about with interstellar mileages oddly comforting strangely enough.  :-\  ;D
