Title: Roll pins
Post by: omegod on 25 August 2018, 17:48:37
Need to replace 2 roll pins that hold the manual gearbox rods together but by christ what a pin in the arse it is, seems the hole is 4 ml ( sized with a drill bit) but can't get a 4 ml roll pin into the bloody hole, any specific technique required ? Tried squeezing it with mole grips to no avail

The only roll pins that I have ever had to install were the door hinge ones, so my comments may not be of great help, but are you sure that the shank of your drill bit is accurately 4mm? Digital calipers or a micrometer would help.
Similarly, are the roll pins exactly 4mm? If the pins are larger than the holes they will never go in without a No. 9 FGH! ::)

I tend to grind a slight taper on the end of roll pins  :y

Roll pins are always that little bit bigger than the stated size  .... that's what keeps them in place  ;)

Maybe they DO need that hammer, then?

Correct way to install them,

That.
If they're the correct size then they'll need a good blow with an appropriate hammer to install them.
