Perhaps you would like to try this product and put together a report/maintenance guide for OOF? If it works it would certainly be a useful tool in our armoury to help keeping our beloved cars going economically!

I have diabetes and high blood pressure (fat bastard, you see!) and have been on statins for some time. Initially they were Simvaststin, but after reading about joint problems caused by that type, my consultant changed me to Atorvastatin a few years back and I've been fine since.
Statins are helpful in ways other than cholesterol, too, so please discuss all of the other benefits with your GP and consider carefully before you turn them down.
With the financial constraints on the health service these days, they would not be offered to you if they did not have real benefits to you.

James keeps ignoring me, too, Kate; but if you can put salt on his tail, he does a perfect job!

General Discussion Area / Re: Ongoing problem with my hifi amp
« on: 16 March 2014, 14:52:26 »
I used to teach Electronics for 20 years before I retired, and soldering was obviously part of what I did.
Lead-free solder has always been pointless (no danger if you wash your hands after using it and especially before eating), but resin-free solder is well worth using, for your own safety; colophony fume has no safe limit.
Now, to your problem. Any chance of a photo of the parts in question, please?
In the absence of a picture, you already have good advice given, but may I add that decent solder of the above type, a good hot iron and reinforcement with wire around the joints are all good techniques.
If you love your amplifier it's well worth keeping.

There was an "I" missing from that last post, and it wasn't MY fault.

By an amazing coincidence, have a birthday this year, too! Happy birthday to us.....

General Car Chat / Re: Autobox level plug.
« on: 15 March 2014, 15:56:36 »
Ok, thanks for your input Webby - time for an update:-
Today I tried to raise the car on my, admittedly, cheap trolley jack, the type with the separate release screw and it wouldn't lift the car off its front wheel so I could get an axle stand under. It just stopped, requiring more pumping force that I could manage! It said it was a 2 ton jack, so surely man enough?
I need to do this before a hospital appointment in the week, or pay the garage again.
I have a Hozelock garden sprayer of similar type to the one you mentioned, with a wand and trigger so if I ever get near to undoing the level I can squirt the ATF in a bit at a time and stop when it dribbles out.....

Ron.

P.S. Just in case any ladies get wxcited by my nickname on here, the "big" in BigRon refers to my belly!

Definitely ATF, Andy; after 2-3 weeks the gearbox starts to play up and requires a couple of litres of ATF to refill it!
The engine oil stays at the correct level throughout.

Thanks again, TG.
Is it an essential part of the procedure to anoint yourself with hot oil? I would like to follow your instructions to the letter, but if I could perhaps omit that stage?
According to my garage, the leak is coming from what looks like a blanking plate (but isn't) towards the rear of the bell-housing; does that sound reasonable?
Would replacing the ATF recondition the seals, as Wynn's and Lucas additives have not?
Sorry for all the questions.

Thanks for the reminder, TG. What are the consequences of over-filling the gearbox? As my driveway isn't level, I can't guarantee to get the level right.

Thanks for your comments, gents; very helpful as usual.
The plug shouldn't be as tight as the proverbial duck's arse as I've had my garage top up the ATF a few times recently (gearbox leak), but now I want to do it myself due to pension-limited finances!
I just wanted to have everything ready to hand so as to spend the minimum amount of time under the car.....

I want to spend the minimum of time under the car (fat, awkward location, etc) so if anyone could tell me what size socket I need to for the level plug, that would save me a little aggro, please?

Forgive my ignorance, but what should they use instead of clip-on weights on alloys?

General Car Chat / Useful aerosol grease.
« on: 10 March 2014, 22:18:41 »
I discovered this very useful lithium-based grease in Poundworld. I've only used it on plumbing fittings so far, but it has been great - just right for an Omega's important little places!
It's called "Easy Grease" by Rapide products, and obviously costs £1.
As an aside, has anyone been watching the programme on Poundworld on telly?
