Title: Front wheel side to side play
Post by: 05omegav6 on 19 March 2016, 18:08:35
Got a persistent knock on the offside front...

Sounds like droplinks when driving and happens when you change vertical forces ie brake/accelerate or up/down bumps etc. Also vibration increasing with speed but you cannot drive through it in the way you might tyre balancing.

There is quater to three play on the wheel but not top to bottom.

Wishbones, droplinks and track rods are a week old, and everything is as tight as a ducks dooberyfirkin. Tyres are also only a week old.

Thinking either wheel bearing or shock, but leaning towards bearing as the car handles beautifully.

Anti roll bar bush? Central steering rod bush (steering arm)? Loose wheel nuts? Broken wheel?

If you take the wheel off, and assuming its still doing it, you might be able to use a screwdriver as a stereoscope to your ear and track it down that way.

Anti-roll bar bushes?
Polybushed...

Seems to be coming from the hub/balljoint area rather than elsewhere...

Certainly no play across the steering, not a peep from tother side.

Dissappear as long as you don't hit a bump :-\

Can you make it do it car stationary by bouncing  the wing?
How long has the poly anti roll bar bush been in place? Could it have worn?

Have you tried getting someone to put their foot on the brake for you? If the play disappears, wheel bearing :y

I know it's new, but I would look again at RH trackrod, both end joints and the clamps on the adjuster.

I only suggested it as today I have been doing my pre-MOT checks on V828 and offside front has no play 12 to 6 but a hint 3 to 9. Took wheel off, and found tiny movement in track rod outer joint. No knocking, so I shall not change the TR.

Your MOT observation spurred me to change my RH trackrod; job now done. Tester might have let it go, but he wouldn't have missed it.
