General Discussion Area / SIM card
« on: 20 August 2020, 18:24:50 »
Hello people
I havent been on here for ages I havent even had a Vauxhall for the last vouple of years now currently running a Mercedes ML320 2007 as I am towing a caravan again
I need some advice and you guys have always been the best place to ask  :y
What I have is a Truma inet system in the caravan which allows control of the heating among other things.
It requires a mini sim to use it and works by sending texts to a phone so I need it to do that preferably pay you go and as it is going to be very low use not cost a lot per month
Any suggestions  please  :)

General Discussion Area / Broken Radio advice
« on: 08 July 2018, 18:10:10 »
Hello I am after some advice from the font of knlowedge called Oof .
I have acquired a desalt radio from work as it was not working ( no sound output ) after taking it apart (almost 40 screws )  I have found it has 4 x 4ohm 5w speakers and a sub inside .
After I touched the speaker to board connectors I have got two speakers working and basically found that one speaker is dead  .
I am not sure how they are connected they have four seperate connectors and are paired to each side if one speaker from the pair is disconnected both speakers on the side stop working .
So I was thinking if I got a resistor 4ohm and connect this in place of the broken speaker would that make the cct think it had the speaker fitted , I am not worried about only having only three speakers . I am only going to be using the radio outside in the garden or when working on the car .

General Discussion Area / Light in the sky
« on: 13 May 2018, 21:44:48 »
Sat at home looking out of the window I can see a bright white single light , it appears about the same time every night just after 2100 hrs . It first appears at approx 270 degrees in the west and in have an hour it has moved over to 280 degrees .
I don’t think it is an aircraft as it only appears to move sideways and does not get any closer or further away , and it repeats this every night .
Any ideas what it could be ?
Apparently SWMBO reckons it is the space station ?

General Car Chat / Taxing a car
« on: 18 March 2018, 08:22:14 »
Well time to ask the OOF font of knowledge a question again 😁I have just sold My Insignia and bought a Nissan Pathfinder ( I know but I had reasons for doing this 😏)
I had a private plate on the Insignia which was removed Thursday via dvla and put on retention ready to go on the new (to me)car on Friday morning this was no problem and cost £80
However Friday lunch time when I went to pick up the new car I tried to tax online  it but was unable to do this .
Checking dvla the pathfinder is showing it has my plate on but it is also taxed still which is why I can’t tax it ?
As the number plates have been swapped over neither V5 is correct the Insignia went back to its original number so that will come back to me with that on which I then need to give to the dealer
Which he was ok with ,to me it looks like the V5 ( with the new plate ) for the pathfinder will go to the lady who sold the car I need to send off the new owner section to dvla to get the V5 in my name with the new plate and owner .
So how do I tax the car anyone know , would the post office be able to do , rather than doing it online ? Any ideas any one

General Discussion Area / Reconditioned laptops
« on: 25 September 2017, 10:56:37 »
What are people’s views on these ? I have an old laptop which needs replacing .It is not dutiable to upgrade to windows 10 ( it is running vista basic )
I don’t want to spend a fortune on a new laptop but I don’t want a cheap new one with no memory so I was looking around and found a few sites selling recon laptops with win 10 on but not sure if they are a good idea they come with warranty for a year so they can’t be too bad a risk can they

« on: 19 July 2017, 19:45:59 »
Does anyone know how to get in too a keyless entry Focus that has a flat battery
My friend says they have just a fob
I looked online and found something which involves taking the fob apart and then there is a key blade inside which can remove a cover and then exposes a lock barrel
Any ideas guys  :y

General Discussion Area / Wifi question
« on: 12 July 2017, 16:38:48 »
Please be gentle  :)
We are just about to change our broadband to BT infinity from standard BT broadband
With the present broadband the wifi signal is poor when sat outside on the patio and in my shed , with the Infinity we have got BT mini connectors to feed the signal from the hub to the set top box rather than a cable .
I understand how this works through the house wiring . So in a long winded way my question is what would I need to extend the wifi out to the shed I have seen the network extenders that plug in to a 13A socket would this be all I needed , it would only be for iPads

General Discussion Area / How dodgy does this sound
« on: 09 May 2017, 16:30:41 »
Swmbo has just said some bloke is coming around later to see her 🙄
Apparently it is to do with a prepaid card (seasons Visa card ) she has said you need to give them some details i.e. Driving licence or passport number and also show them a household bill with your name and address on , you don't have to do anything but they send you £50 for signing the card
Now am I just being overly suspicious of does this sound very dodgy apparently she knows a few people that are doing it I have alarm bells ring

General Car Chat / Maf sensor problem
« on: 19 December 2016, 10:58:38 »
Had a tinker with Swmbo car yesterday had to replace the front discs and pads on it no problem
Then she mentions it won't accelerate and goes into a limp mode if she tries to pull away too quickly brings up MIL so plugged the scanner in to find it is showing turbo/supercharger over boost fault I cleared this and decided to have a quick look for anything obvious .
Anyway after deciding it was not the weather to be laying on the floor playing cars I put everything back together
Anyway this morning 0700 she goes out and comes back about 10 min later and says the car is dead it won't rev or go over 20mph and it is my fault !! Anyway hooked up the scanner again and found code p0101 air mass sensor problem checked connector as I bought I may have forgot to reconnect it but it was ok quick google for new MAF £120 , then found out I may be able to just clean the maf with contact cleaner so worth a go .
After pulling the cover off the top of the engine to remove the maf and undoing the maf mount I found an old leaf stuck on the maf !
It must have got in there while I had the air filter out , anyway after again putting it all back together the fault has now gone
I didn't know you could clean MAF sensors there are even cleaners for this purpose I just used contact cleaner borrowed from work

General Discussion Area / Amazon emails
« on: 07 December 2016, 10:13:02 »
Just a heads up
I have recently had a couple of emails supposedly from Amazon suggesting someone has tried to buy a fire Hd using my account and that they have refused payment for it , it then gives links to sort it out
I have just contacted Amazon just to double check and the emails are not from Amazon so just be aware , they do look to be very genuine though

General Car Chat / Aircon debugg
« on: 28 August 2016, 09:12:06 »
My car is due its second year service and I decided to have the aircon recharged and debugged at the same time
My question is regarding the pollen filter VX apparently don't change the pollen filter as part of the services I replaced it myself last year at its first service and took it out about a month ago to clean it , now do I replace it again this year and if so do I wait until the aircon is debugged or change it before then .
The air con does not smell but I thought I may as well get it debugged before it does prevention rather than cure idea
Going in to Eden VX in Kidlington Oxon
