The Omega; a funny old sod (geometry thread)
« on: 12 November 2019, 20:48:18 »

So the old dog is going in for a WIM setup in December. I’ve tried to do the alignment myself but I’ve got to admit defeat. Part of the issue is our works cheap alignment machine doesn’t allow adjustments with the car jacked up like the WIM machine has (the Hunter set up I believe?)

Anyway that’s a side issue. It drives ok. Ish. But it’s still not perfect. I’m no geometry expert but I’d say it’s very susceptible to tram lining. I’ve gone over all suspension and steering and renewed quite a few components. The only things that are old are the rear springs (approx. 6 years old) and front struts/springs. I’ve got a suspicion they may be original. Everything else is new.

I’ve spoken to Tony at WIM and he thinks it’s a geometry issue and I hope he’s right cos if not I may have to throw the towel in and get a Fiesta! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Anyway to my actual question.... why is the omega such a sensitive sod with the geometry? I understand that there’s a lot of adjustments that can be made unlike ya standard shitty fiesta where only front toe is adjustable but it just seems to be overly sensitive. Your thoughts...

My view is that it's a compromise you face for having a relatively simple MacPherson strut suspension setup as opposed to a double wishbone. In addition, the Omega is wearing much wider rubber than was the norm when the original platform was designed, and that doesn't help matters.

Don't need to jack car up, just get 8, 18" square pieces of steel, grease them up make 4 sandwich, then you have 4 skid/turntable plates.

I've never had a car that is so sensitive to the alignment set up as the Omega  ::)  And you could really tell the difference when it was set up properly.  :y

a glossy magazine under each wheel works just as well.

there's three adjustments worth in a year. And if you replace all of the service/wear parts it won't need doing for ages - twice in the nine years I owned the car.

Tramlining is also caused by shit tyres.  What are you using?

Four new kumhos. New as at a couple of months ago. No odd tyre wear on my old ones or the new tyres.

Other things ive changed are track rods and idler arm. Is it possible there are some joints from steering wheel down that could be iffy? Though I fear I’m clutching at straws here. As said hopefully Tony can sort it 👍👍👍👍👍

You either have play, geo is out, or tyres a bit shite. Either are likely.

Is it tramlining from the front, or from the rear.  I'm having issues with the rear of TBE.

I can’t say whether it’s front or rear. When I say it tramlines I mean it pulls to road imperfections. And at speed (above 60) it just feels unstable and wandery.

When i popped up to see u the other day I drove mums fusion and besides the annoying rattle from her plastic door trims 🤣 it really was planted and I felt confident going fast.

Another way of describing it is I’ll be driving along at motorway speed and it’ll all of a sudden feel like the cars been hit by a strong side wind, I’ll adjust steering and it’ll settle down again. Until the next gust of wind feeling.

I know my description is shite 🤣 but it’s the only way I can describe it.
