My Third Omega......
« on: 21 January 2007, 12:15:50 »

Had a 96 Elite, changed to a 02 CDX, but wanted the horses back, so now my third is a 03 3.2 Elite

Why on earth would you want a manual box on a 3.2 Elite? :o

For the same reason you want a steering wheel and a gas pedal. When they invent automatic steering, braking and accelerating, maybe then I'll get a car with an automatic gearbox and let it drive me safely home from the pub when I'm pissed 8-). Until then I'll do the driving myself thanks.

More to the point, why did VX even bother doing a facelift MV6? Not much of a sports model if you can't even get the bigger engine variant with a manual box  >:(

Anyway back on topic.... nice looking motor you got there, very clean and shiny :y

forgot to add thats a very nice Elite!!  :y

I find the 3.0 MV6 a very fast car even with an autobox, they are big heavy cars and the bullet proof smooth GM autoboxs suit it well.

Funnily enough I don't find even the manual all that quick, 210 BHP isn't anything special in such a big car, and the gearing is too high for an engine with peak power at 6,000 RPM. What they really need is a 6-speed box to allow the ratios to be lowered without comprimising cruising; a 4-speed slushbox and torque converter is exactly the opposite!

The GM autobox is far from bulletproof, it may be good by normal slushbox standards but a quick search of this site will reveal that failures requiring complete box replacement are not uncommon. I don't consider the R28 manual box to be a particularly strong unit but it's still loads more reliable than the autos from what I can tell.

Actually...no.. :o

I paid for it to be 'Guardex' treated, but whoever did it must have been blind....waste of money.. :o

I need to get some Autoglym on it, and get all the white poo out of all the joints. Rubber window seals are terrible, crying for some bumber care cream.
They did a better job on the interior though

I know there have been a few fails, but considering the amount out there and the amount of cars they are in. Thats not many.

The AR35 in my Senator is still silky smooth @ 141k miles, and no noise from it.

Without maintenance any box will fail, but the boxes by GM have been quoted as the finest in the world.

The rate at which my Senator goes from 30 up to 3 figures is incredible.... why you need anything more powerful than that for regular road use is beyond me!  :-/

The point is that, generally manual boxes do not fail, and require little to no maintenance. The oil in my BMW's gearbox does not require to be changed for the life of the car, I was sceptical so had it changed last time the car was in for a service. The oil that came out was the same pink/red as the new stuff! I expect the Omega gearbox is similar - mine is on 168k and does not get an easy life, it's just had a new clutch that will probably allow it to do another 150k with no maintenance, assuming the engine lasts that long!

BTW There are websites claiming the Rover K-series is the finest 4 cylinder engine in the world, maybe you should ask TheBoy what his thoughts are on that one ;) "finest in the world" quotes are ten a penny, personally I don't take them at face value.

Your senator's acceleration is only incredible to you because you're not used to it yet. I'm not knocking it, but believe me you'll get used to it and it won't feel particularly impressive any more. I thought the same thing when I got a 280 BHP Impreza at 22, wow phenomenal acceleration, but soon enough it became "normal". That would do 0-100 in under 13 seconds, but after a while it didn't feel that special. Hence why a manual 3.0 Omega doesn't feel fast at all, even though it's the fastest model you could buy (with the exception of the cop-only 3.2 manual). You don't "need" anything faster than a Daewoo Matiz for road driving, but power is nice especially when you get onto the twisty B-roads. It's not all about straight line acceleration, being able to effectively make use of the power is where it's fun.

Well.....I've already done the arches/bulges/mirraflake/sidepipes/padded interior/christmas tree lights on a motor......too many years ago to tell (but I do have a picture, and it was a Mini)..... ;D

This one is staying stock..... :y

A 280 BHP Impreza at 22, that premium must have been a bit steep!

I know what you mean about power, you do get used to it. I had a 2.0 Mondeo after a 1.3 Nissan, that felt it had so much power but soon lost its power feel.

Think its going to take a while to sake off Senator power, as per my other thread 'i have a problem'.

There is no doubt the Omega 3.0 and Senator 3.0 are very fast cars, nothing has beat me yet  ;)

I think a chipped Senator would give your BMW a run for its badge  ;) - Will have same top end speed

Insurance was rather steep, but I thought what the heck, I really wanted a powerful car so put up with it. Have been driving since 17, no accidents or claims so that helps. The upside is that by the time you hit your mid 20s, insuring group 20 cars like the BMW is comparatively cheap, and group 17(?) cars like the Omega MV6 is peanuts :D

Don't worry, something will beat you soon enough  :D There are a lot of quick cars out there, although more often than not they won't be racing! Even in the Subaru I had a few problems now and then (mostly higher speed stuff, off the line it was very difficult to beat thanks to light weight and AWD - 0-60 in under 5 secs).

Unless your chipped senator is producing well over 300 BHP it won't have the same top speed as the 840Ci. Small increases in top speed require lots of power, as the drag due to air resistance increases quadratically. That's why my Subaru, which had a tad over 300 BHP when I sold it, would run out of steam around 160 MPH. The BMW has much better aerodynamics - long sleek shape with narrow sculped mirrors and pop-up lights to keep the frontal area small. So with only slightly more power than the Subaru had, it does 173 MPH at the top end. Aerodynamics makes a huge difference here, and the only other factor that matters is power. Notice how the new M5 just cracks 200 MPH with 500 BHP!

I don't think i will change from big Vauxhalls for a while, you get so much go and kit for your money. johndm1957 Elite cost a lost less than a second hand Focus i bet!

A chipped Senator 24v can do 170  ;)

It still holds the record for the UK's fastest ever police car at 167 mph, and thats will all the stuff a copper car carrys!  :o

Thanks for all the comments guys....

Getting all the small niggles ironed out, dealer sticker in rear window was shorting HRW/Aerial (radio would go off with HRW on),
new mats/wipers etc, just had wheels re-balanced...all little items, but it would have been nice if all these little bits were done before I picked it up. Front tyres nearly had it, but there's a brand new Pirelli Pzero in the boot on an alloy wheel, (my other Omegas have had steel spare with smaller tyre).
Main prob is loose HID bulb, but my local garage gonna fix that on Friday while I wait (my hands too big, and I ain't got a torx set).

Wheel balancing was the best thing i ever did on mine, the idiot of a last owner had it poorly maintained. The alloys were weighted on the outside !  :o

You bought the mats yet? - If not PM MarksDTM he can get them at a good price, and they are propper Omega ones and look good!

Tell me about it......they are getting very hard to find at a realistic price. I guess people have just realised they're not being made anymore, and not selling?
