Omega General Help / Re: Late model powersounder wanted
« on: 01 December 2020, 17:37:38 »
If powersounders are no longer available from Vauxhall then presumably there would be no insurance comeback from not having one fitted?

Also, one shouldn't search too diligently for a new one .

I charged the battery and everything is OK, including the radio.  I therefore assume the radio would not work because the battery voltage was too low.

I guess the problem of uncharged batteries is worse now I am using the car so little though I am surprised that the 30 miles I drove on Friday did not fully charge the battery.

flat battery and stiff lock solution is to attach a +jump lead from a good battery to the starter motor + terminal and hey presto you have power to operate the central locking
What a good idea.

I was wondering how I could get access to a 12V lead so I could apply some power and this solves it.  I was thinking of running a 12V lead into the one tail light cluster so I could remove the plastic cover and get to 12V.  I only have one towing socket so it doesn't have a 12V pin.

I could not find anything in the forum on how to pop the bonnet from outside.  Searching on bonnet gets only 30 hits and none say how to pop it other than a reference to smashing the plastic grill to get access.  But now I know how to unlock it I don't need to worry about it.

Brilliant!  Many thanks.

When I turn the key clockwise I meet resistance and the button wiggles a bit.  If I then increase pressure I hear a click.  The button does not come up, which fooled me at first, but the door can be opened with the handle.  I dug out the manual and, as always, Please read the manual would have worked - it's on page 58 - "Lock button remains in depressed position".

The battery is as flat as a proverbial pancake and the power sounder (I have replaced it once already) is going to be chucked as far as I can throw it.

A thought.  I know it's old and no-one will want to pinch it, but I read that insurers have "Check if the power sounder has been removed" on their checklist for Omegas.  Can I still leave it in place but just cut the 12V wire from the car battery to it?  The sounder will go off until its rechargeable battery goes flat ... and I will never be bothered by it again.  Or does it disable the car from starting when it goes off?

Could another thought be to put a diode in the lead from the 12V battery.  That's way, the car battery can charge the power sounder but the power sounder cannot discharge the car battery.  I've seen the photos: I suppose it could still catch fire.

I'll get another key - I just don't fancy paying about £160 for it.  That's probably more than the car is worth.

Today the key fob will not open the door or the boot.  The red light on the key flashes but the lock does not open.

I therefore inserted the key to unlock it mechanically but it would not open.  When I turn the key clockwise I can see the lock-pull-up button moving slightly but it does not come up.

How do I get into the car without doing any? too much? damage?

Why won't the key open the door mechanically?  I last did so a week or two ago when the key-fob battery was low so the lock worked then.

Points of possible interest.

1.  I changed the key fob battery a week or so ago and the key worked OK until today
2.  I locked the car with two button presses so it is deadlocked.
3.  I last used the car on Friday when all was working OK except the radio had stopped working and the display was blank in the centre portion.  The clock was displaying but does not say it is synch-ed to the radio signal.

I don't have a second key - would buying a spare from Vauxhall help?

As always all help will be gratefully appreciated.

EDIT:  Is it a flat battery which stops the central locking working?  If so, why won't the key work the lock mechanically? I'll search the forum to see how I can pop the bonnet.

Remove all the lands except for one.  The lock will still work quite happily.

Of course, lots of other keys will open it but n thief would know that and they would have to get into the car first in any case.

I am guessing but I would expect the barrel to be the same on other Vauxhall cars.

Ideally I'd like to pull the pins out of the connector, but I doubt I'll have the correct pin extraction tools.
Could you bodge a pin extraction tool?

I don't know Vauxhall plugs and sockets well but most pins just have a longitudinal bit of the pin sprung away from the pin to act as a catch when the pin is inserted into the plug body.  A bit of very thin metal (Coke can? bit of old feeler gauge?  bit of beryllium copper strip from an old relay?) pushed up from the connection side might get through and do enough to force the springs back to allow the pin to be extracted.

Or very fine long nose tweezers coming down from the wire side?

They aren't expensive - see https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=electric+socket+pin+extraction+tool&_sacat=0 where I searched on electric socket pin extraction tool and an 18 piece set is £2.65 but from China (where else) so takes a while.

Another thought.  Can you insert extra fuses after F15 but as close as possible to where the wiring splits off for the circuit?  Or is access too difficult?

Say F15 powers 5 circuits.  Insert smaller fuses (10A?) as close as possible to F15 but in each of the 5 circuits.

If only F15 blows it is in the wiring before any of the other fuses or you have missed a sixth circuit.

If any of the other fuses blows it is that circuit.

It could help to isolate the problem by eliminating "good" circuits.

A complication is the fuses are in series with the larger F15 but if you set F15 to 30A and the others to 10A it is likely the 10A will blow before F15 blows.

I have been trying to think of a way of using the return current to the battery (it must be over 20A) to identify the region in the bodywork it flows through but I think and voltage drop it would be too small to be useful.

I hate intermittent faults - they drive anyone to insanity.

One thought.  You say the sun roof does not work.  This may be because it needs resetting after the battery was disconnected.  Reset instructions are in the manual or I could upload mine (2.2 DTI).  It could be the source of the fault but because it "doesn't work" you are not testing it.

Omega General Help / Re: Heater Matrix change

It's a pig of a job if done as in the manual.

There is a post somewhere where you cut your way through to get access to the heater and you don't need to remove the dashboard.

Got it.  See Heater matrix replacement at http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90621.0

Omega General Help / Re: Remote to centrallocking fail
« on: 31 March 2020, 18:58:53 »
The track on the PC in the key from the Open switch broke on mine.  The pad was still soldered to the switch but the pad to track was broken.

Everything was then very intermittent depending on whether the broken ends were touching or not.  Even if the key light came on the key sometimes did not open the car - I wondered if the signal was too short or too corrupted to work.  Soldering a new link fixed the problem.

Omega General Help / Re: Key programing
« on: 16 February 2020, 17:54:36 »
Sorry to hijack the thread but it may be useful to the OP too.

Can it be done by post?  or is the car necessary?

I ask as I lost one of my two keys.  I still have the other "key with chip" so I bought a chip and key blank from fleabay and wonder what my next step might be.

Can the new chip be cloned to be the same as the original?  or does the new chip need to be matched to the car?

It was the fuel pump which had failed.  It got a new bit of electronics and all is now well.

Omega General Help / Re: Alarm going off

Is a quick and nasty solution to cut the lead from the car battery +ve to the powersounder?

The powersounder will now sound as it is detecting the car battery voltage.  After it has run its battery flat you will not have any more trouble from it.  Tape up the cut wire in the loom.

Even if the flat battery in the powersounder carries on corroding it does not have any power to cause a fire.

I have read that insurance surveyors often now look to see if a stolen Omega has had the powersounder removed and a casual glance would not spot this change.

Thanks.  All the fuses are OK so I am beginning to suspect the relay for the glow plugs or the fuel pump.
