Title: my phone has died
Post by: Andy B on 19 May 2020, 10:45:15
It's a Samsung S6 & though I've had it a while now and the battery life could be better it's done what I wanted to.
It was on charge all last night, used it this morning to check on something with the bank, put it in my pocket when I walked the Mutt. Took it out to look while walking & the screen was blank .... thought maybe the battery had died but nothing when on charge at home.
Obviously nothing was backed up ......   :-[ :-[ :-[

What are the chances of recovering stuff off it?  :-\ :-\ :-\

first, a lot may be already backed up to google so when you sign into a new phone with your google account (assuming you have one?) then a lot may just appear.
second, depends whats died...can you connect it to pc?  does it do anything?  or have an adaptor to screen mirror to tv - may just be broken display.

Firstly my condolences on for your loss :)

As KW said, if when you set the phone up you created a Google or Samsung account it should be backed up there and when you get another phone, just log into either or and it should dump everything on to your new phone, you can check if you have a Google account on a laptop, by signing in everything should be there...

Also try using a wall charger directly into the phone as these delivery better volts into the battery. Than wireless charging.

How can volts fly through the air and into your phone ?

It's a Samsung S6 .......

The exact same thing happened to my S6, and I never got it going again. It was working perfect, I put it on charge (it was still on and functioning fine), I took it off charge and it was dead. It won't even try to switch on. I still have it actually, not that that helps at all.  ;D
I had backed up/saved my photos to my laptop and when I purchased a new phone I found out that my contacts etc. had all been hiding on a cloud somewhere, and they all came back home to me to be on my new phone.  ::) :)

Other option maybe to connect an HDMI adaptor to the phone, and plug into TV, could be working, but you cant see it.
Depends if its alive.

If it should be set to ring out loud, or vibrate, ring it from another phone and see what it does to work out how dead it is.

Have you tried pressing and holding the power button for 10 secs? This should trigger a restart off the phone in case its on but non-responsive.

I get the feeling it's the same as Alan's .... normally it chirps as you put it on the charger (both directly & via the wireless) but it's not doing anything.

There's a chance that the battery could have completely died, but to find out you'd have to go to the expense of trying a new one, probably without success.

I tried all sorts with mine as this issue was quite well documented on the Internet and nothing would bring it back to life. It happened to the S6 and some early S7's. I left it on charge for a week to see if would would possibly come back to life, but still nothing.  :-\

My lad let his battery go completely flat and didn't use the phone for a while. I had to leave the charger plugged in for about ten minutes before it even showed the battery icon at 0%

When my phone died I bought this one from Argos. Cheap enough and certainly more modern than a S6:

Must be one of the only known cases of that happening to an under 25!  :D

Not when you consider he's been home from uni for nearly two months and hasn't moved out of the house! Laptop has taken a hiding but no need for a phone.

OK, if you haven't got cloud backup, come back to me, I may have other solutions.

Firstly, what do you mean by 'dead'?
When connected to a charger, do you get a light? Anything on the display at all?
If not, try cleaning the port with a clean toothbrush. Then try another cable/charger. It's also worth trying the wireless charging, sometimes it works when the port is broken.

On the phone, hold vol down + home button and then press the power button. Any vibration? Anything on the screen? It should show up 'download mode'. (If it does, you can power off as normal) This is just a test to see what level you can get too.

Report back with the results.

(I will say, these are a PITA to fix, the screen and back panel are glued in place. This normally involves a heat pad and around 85 degrees to melt the glue, before opening the panels. Also, unless you take it back to Samsung, you are unlikely to keep your waterproof rating.)

Just to clarify, if Andy's phone died in the same fashion as my S6 (and many others according to an online search), it went as follows.

In my case, the phone was working perfectly and the battery was running at around 65%. I like it to be on 100% at the start of the next day so I put it on charge via the plug in charger that comes with the phone. It beeps as normal and the charging light was flashing. Some time later I picked it up and the screen was blank. I pressed the power button, but nothing happened. I plugged it back in to the charger and no lights came on, it was dead. The same with the car wireless charger. I googled all of the fixes, press and hold power button and - volume, press and hold power button while holding the -volume and the home button but still nothing. I even tried all of the above whilst standing on one leg and whistling Dixie.  ::)
I've had several iPhones apart for various reasons, new screens, batteries etc. but Samsung just love to make you unglue the back case to get at the screws for the front case. iPhones are easy to work on by comparison. I've watched the videos on YouTube on how to bring them back to life but Samsung make it such a faff just to get at something simple.  ::)

Haven't S6 got a proper removable battery, eg remove back cover battery comes out, because it covers the SIM/sd card??

Sadly not, the SIM card goes in the top in the slide-in drawer tab.

One of the lucky one's, now go and back it all up before it does it for real next time.  ;D :y  I have tried all of the combinations of button pressing for over 10 seconds, 30 seconds etc. as I said earlier but mine is definitely a confirmed dead one.  :y
I don't even want it, as I've long since replaced it, but it's immaculate so I want to fix it before I throw it away.  ::) ;D

Will do ..... definitely the battery on its last legs, a fully charged battery soon dropped to 85% when trying a game.

In the days of make and break dials, it made no difference whether you tapped out the number on the handset switch or not, you'd still have to pay.
