How do you tell if a unit is fully functional – is there a way of measuring its continuity/resistance with a multimeter?
Yes
Using the continuity setting you should get a beep if you touch any two of the four terminals with the probes. If any terminal doesn't seem to do anything then it is nfg.

[assuming that the hedgehog is a simple switched series resistor not an electronic speed controller]
OPs car is a FL, thus it'll be an ESC....

Thanks for the input, chaps. I got a used one from Nigel, fitted it today and everything works as it should again.  :y
