parts price shock

i paid a visit to my local vauxhall dealer as i wanted 4 headlamp retaining screws. when the guy returned i had a shock at the price of one screw £1.54 plus the vat, have to say i thought that audi prices where expensive but seams that this dealer has taken it to a whole new level. :(

I've paid more than £1.54 for a screw.......and she wasn't very nice. :-X

I've paid more than £1.54 for a screw.......and she wasn't very nice. :-X

The manifold-to-cat section of exhaust nut is about three odd quid. I lost one when doing an exhaust, looked for it for ages, eventually bought one brand new Vx, then of course found the original on the drive a day or two later  :D

Only if you're stupid enough to buy them Vauxhall.


When I did my head gaskets, I replaced all of the head to exhaust manifold studs&nuts, plus the manifold to downpipe studs&nuts for £6. They're standard fasteners(the studs are the same as a Pinto for example), as are the screws the OP bought.

for certain things e.g banjo bolts , leak off tubing i always use Pirtek ., quids cheaper. Power Point ( not sure if they are nation wide ) but for nuts, bolts & washers i go there.

Just go to a local fastener supplier,   use to buy lots of stainless nuts bolts etc, it's surprising how cheap they are.

Some years ago (over 15 yrs?) I replaced one of the locking nuts for the 'tappets' on my Senator. IIRC it was £1.90 for the single nut. I bought 2 just in case but only used one .... the spare is still knocking about somewhere  :-\

Most of the fasteners you'd consider replacing on a car are standard and cheap. I keep a selection of M5,6,8&10 nuts, bolts(in useful lengths) and washers from a local firm and only spent more than £10 on the M10. When I wanted new hardware for the doors on my sister's Morris I put the odd(to me) bolts on the counter and he was surprised when I said they weren't for a Land Rover - 12 new Phillips domed head BZP Whitworth screws for 30p each.


To buy fasteners in a cost effective way, you need to be able to identify them which requires some measuring kit. The good news is that a cheap digital caliper(£10ish) and a £5 thread gauge(Ebay, Machine Mart etc) and some understanding of the nomenclature is all you need. For instance if you ask for a 10mm bolt because you used that size spanner to undo it, you're going to be surprised by what they sell you

i once wanted some rubber seals for an oil cooler on a 2.2dti. ordered them via trade club. there are two types & when i went to pick them up they were in packs of ten. i had to buy both packs, but to be fair they only charged me cost.

Well, yes, you are right on that one sometimes, as I found out at the back end of last year.

My policy is to replace any parts I need with genuine Vx ones to maintain my cars value in my eyes. Always have done that and always will.  But sometimes it bites you on the bum, like the complete, top quality, direct from Germany, from OPel/Vx stocks, wishbones at £254 +VAT each, even with TC!

Still, they will outlast the car no matter how long I keep it, which I aim to be many years yet! ::) ::) :D :D ;)
