My son has a 2yr old long wheel base high top transit on contract hire and has no further need of it.

£315 per month, 3 years left.

Just asking on his behalf.           I'm here to be shot at!

Any alternative advice on what one can do with an unwanted lease vehicle would be gratefully received.

How much depends on the small print, but if he's within the annual mileage limits and in good condition (relative to said mileage limits) should be as simple as a phone call

Yep that's how I handed my Ranger back - no penalty to pay as it was within mileage.  Of course, that's assuming the van is with Ford Lease and not a third party lease company who could be infinitely more sleasy about it..

When MB can get back to a mentality of actually designing cars, rather than simply seeign whats available in the parts bin, then I might consider looking at them again.

This is why the likes of BMW are better in all technical respects, hands down.  BMW's problems are build quality, and a "tosspot" image

Had two Mercs absolutely no problems at all , even the Omega I had was trouble free just lucky I guess. Worst cars I ever owned were Fords. Now on my third Merc.

It also comes with a nice brown anorak and a flask for tea, so that you don't catch a cold while waiting for the van to be recovered. Then there's the three week wait for parts, at the VW Commercial dealer that is miles away. Mercedes follow this approach too.


If you're actually going to use a van, ensure it has a Ford badge on it.

What, like my Transit Connect which was in Allen Ford (Bath) for 9 weeks for an Oil Cooler failure (18months old, less than 50k on the clock).

Ford can kiss my smelly ringpiece.  I'll be buying a Caddy next.

My very old and still immaculate VW T4 is a much better workhorse, and if it weren't for the bastard Government with the LEZ charge, I'd still be using it for work.

If a bad back is your problem, buy a Renisshall Vivaster(any one of the three, they're basically the same). The damn thing will break down so much that you won't be sitting in it long enough for your back to hurt. Of course, you won't get any work done either.

My last works tranny was a 2.5 (I think) NA diesel.

After dumping most of the contents my retarded oppswit boss insisted I carried in the skip, I took it to a weighbridge, and was still 150kgs over MGW.

But it mostly handled pretty well with the rear wheels glued down like that, and given a big enough run up (like jnc11 to jnc13 of M1) would hit 3 digit speeds.

Comfortable, economical (20mpg), guaranteed road presence, I loved it.

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt.  Far superior platform to the Transick in my opinion. However, you're not wrong; reliability isn't a buzzword that can be attributed to it with a straight face.

Borrowed one of them from work a year or so ago. 2 miles up the road the cable that does the gearchange came off.  Couple of cable ties later it was bodged back into running order.. for now.

I hired a MWB hitop Transit last weekend - seemed like a comfortable, decent drive to me. Granted I was only in it for an hour total

True, but a Sprinter/Crafter isn't much better. And they're far worse things to own.
