General Discussion Area / Sexual assault....?
« on: 06 March 2008, 22:49:26 »

In a nut shell...

Male student meets female student outside a bar at Cambridge uni. Male student has been drinking. Female student had according to her account '4 or 5 shots of Malibu'. Male invites female to his room to continue drinking, female accepts.

Male and female kiss. Female admits consenting. Male starts groping, female says 'no thank you' and goes away.

Shortly after female comes back to male room, 'looking for part needed to fix a broken computer'. Male pins female to the floor, takes her clothes off (but not his), performs 'simulated sex' with her, tries to put his hand into her knickers. Female 'telling him to stop over and over again'. Finally female says stop, male stops, lets female go.

Male stands trial for sexual assault.

General Discussion Area / Holts TyreWeld?
« on: 23 February 2008, 13:35:16 »
Wife’s car had a flat tyre yesterday. It was cold, and I was lazy, and we don’t have HomeStart, so I decided to do the poorman’s fix and use Holts TyreWeld instead of changing the tyre (yes, the car has a full-size spare).

The instructions on the can say that the bottle need to be agitated vigorously, which I can manage, and if the weather is cold it should be warmed.... now form pseudo-scientific experiments carried out in my youth I know that warming an aerosol can with a cigarette lighter is not a good idea... so the other option was to tuck the cold metal can under my shirt. Brrrr....

OK, got that sorted, connected the tube to the tyre and opened the valve at the top of the can... lots of foamy goo seem to rush from the can into the wheel for a few seconds, then nothing... the instructions say to wait until the entire contents of the can has been transferred to the wheel, but problem was the can was still well over half full... so I waited for 10 minutes, then gave up and disconnected the tube.

The whole process made no impression on the tyre, which remained just as uninflated as it was when I started the process. So at this stage I took out the footpump and inflated the tyre to around 15psi, just enough to drive slowly to the petrol station (not forgetting to take a 50p coin with me, nothing is free in London...). Footpumping the tyre took around half an hour.... so by this time I was one hour from when I started. Changing the wheel would have been quicker.

Also, the instructions say that you need to drive immediately 6 to 12 miles to ensure even distribution of the stuff inside the tyre... yeah, sure in central London... with roadworks, traffic lights, and general congestion.... no way.

At the local Tesco garage, I tried inflating the tyre further, but the problem was that the valve was full of the sticky gooey stuff, and this seems to confuse the air compressor. I tried it inflate it to 40psi, but the reading kept changing between 5psi and 25psi and the pump stopped. I think it was not able to sense the tyre pressure correctly. So eventually I gave up and drove away, at this point I had around 20psi in the tyre.

Took the car to the ATS branch, they fixed the hole which was done by a screw (probably from the nearby Gordon Ramsey pub that has been undergoing renovation). Cost of fixing the tyre was around a tenner, plus a fiver for wheel balancing (each), and a new valve and VAT, total £25. By the way, the guy at ATS said that the TyreWeld stuff can ruin the tyre, and that I was lucky it did not cause any damage...

My question is – has anyone ever tried using the likes of TyreWeld  and was successful? Or is it just me?

General Discussion Area / Congestion Charge
« on: 15 February 2008, 13:23:26 »
New Congestion Charge for Londoners from October 2008...

Cars up to 120g/km CO2 are exempt.

Cars from 121 to 225 pay 'standard' charge of £8

cars from 225 upwards pay £25, but only if registered after 1 March 2001.

Alternative Fuel cars (i.e. Hybrid and Gas) are no longer automatically exempt, instead they will have to pay liken everyone else based on CO2 emissions.

There is however something to slightly sweeten the pill  for those who just bought new a Prius, any alternative fuel car registered with TFL prior to October 2008 will continue to benefit from charge exemption until January 2010 provided the car did not change ownership.

Now both my cars are above the 225 limit, but while one is R98 so will keep paying £8, sadly the Omega was registered in June 2001 so will attract the £25 charge...

My options are to wither sell it and get an older Omega (e.g. a nice 3.0L x-reg facelift), or buy a newer small car.

The wonders of Mr. Livingston... if I sell my 2.6L car and buy an older one with a 3.0 L engine I pay the lower Congestion Charge  :o

but either way my 2001 Omega will have to go  :'(

watch the 'for sale' section  ;)

« on: 08 February 2008, 14:52:15 »
In spite of the fact that the double yellow line is passing on the outside of the bay (formed by a disused factory entry), cars parked there get done for 'obstructing public footpath'. I wonder what would happen if they disputed it?

I found this article made fascinating reading:

...regardless on whether they should name a school after him or not.

Granted, there's nothing really new there, but it is a powerful reminder of what it was like here just 65 years ago...

OK, this thread is about automotive inventions that seemed like a great idea, and while they did not flop as such, they just never caught on...

When I say 'never caught on' it does not necessarily mean they have been condemned to oblivion, it is just that they have not been universally accepted by car buyers (and therefore by car manufacturers), so they do exist the offering is limited and remains a niche market in the main.

The point is that you would have thought that if something is a good idea, it would catch on and become commonplace. Some examples for ideas that did catch on are ABS brakes, Airbags, in-car SatNav, electric windows, central locking / remote control locking, etc.. there are many others, these are just to demonstrate what happens when an idea is good and receives general welcome and implemented by a wide range of manufacturers on many if their models.

So this thread is not about any of these these...

'With Britain in the grip of an epidemic of stabbings and drunken disorder, with chief constables complaining that crimes by illegal immigrants are out of control, the police have announced a clampdown - on car number plates.

People who tamper with their registrations to spell out their names, such as S1NDY, will have their number plates confiscated and face fines of up to £1,000.

I've always thought it not worth the effort.

R1CHD doesn't really cut it for me. Surely it's easier to change your name by deed poll to LN05 XYZ.

I suspect the real reason for this "clampdown" is because non-standard plates confuse speed cameras and help some people escape fines and driving bans.

Still, we can all sleep easily in our beds knowing Plod's on the trail of these dangerous number-plate bandits.

M1ND how you go.'

General Discussion Area / Cheezy stuff....  but here it is anyway
« on: 19 January 2008, 11:46:46 »
A thief in Paris planned to steal some paintings from the Louvre.

After careful planning, he got past security, stole the paintings and made it safely to his van. However, he was captured only two blocks away when his van ran out of gas.

When asked how he could mastermind such a crime and the make such an obvious error, he replied:

"Monsieur, zat iz zee reason I stole ze paintings.

I had no Monet

to buy Degas

to make zee Van Gogh."

See if you have De Gaulle to send this on to someone else.

I posted it here because I figured I had nothing Toulouse!
