General Discussion Area / A point of law....
« on: 18 January 2008, 18:16:07 »
Just a quick question...

Does the 'straight ahead' arrow on the traffic light (marked with the red arrow) mean that a right-turn is not permitted? Or is it a 'suggestion' only?

If it does mean that you are not allowed to make a right (or left) turn, then what is the difference between this and the 'no right turn' sign (marked with a blue arrow)?

General Discussion Area / Parking fines in London
« on: 12 January 2008, 09:14:59 »
It used to be the case that a ticket was not valid unless it was attached to the windscreen, i.e. if you moved the car before the traffic warden managed to stick it under the wiper you were in the clear.

They announced today on the news that they are changing the rules, a ticket is valid even if you moved your car before the warden manage to actually print and attach it to the windscreen.

The reason? A lady from the H&S brigade stared straight into the camera and said in a very serious voice that drivers driving away trying to avoid a ticket are a 'serious safety hazard to other drivers and pedestrians'.

What hypocrisy... if I were the reporter, I would asked the lady to see the statistics regarding how many people in the UK are injured every year by cars fleeing traffic wardens... my guess is somewhere between zero to nil.

General Discussion Area / Humbled...
« on: 10 January 2008, 15:36:51 »
.. by VW Transporter DTI. Thought it would be easy peasy to get ahead of it at the traffic lights, but the bugger gave up quite a fight for the first 10 yards (his roar could be heard all over London I must add, the Omega is much more subdued), but then he ran out of breath as it needed to change gear (narrow power band on Diesels he he). While I was still going strong in 1st and could have gained on him easily from this point on, sadly the road narrowed down and I had to give up.  :-/

General Discussion Area / Anyone has a Previa?
« on: 09 January 2008, 22:01:44 »
Just a quick question...

On our Toyota Previa, the idle when cold is 1800-1900 rpm, which sounds a bit high to me... it goes down to 500 when the engine warms up, no problem.

Just wandered if anyone has/had a Previa, and can check/remember if this is normal (mine is a 1998 2.4 petrol)? Funnily, we had the car since new but for the life of me I can't remember if it was always like that... :-[

General Discussion Area / Is there an electrician in the house...?
« on: 06 January 2008, 13:07:30 »
Our Christmas tree lights needed renewing, lots of dead bulbs (of a type you can get), one faulty AC adaptor etc.... so after New Year’s day the wife bought a couple of new sets for next Christmas.

The old sets had massive AC adaptors, which is normal. The actual wires around the tree carry much lower voltage than the mains 230V as this is more than enough for the tiny bulbs, and obviously safer.

But the new lights have no AC Adaptor, just Mains plug going straight on the wire... it seems that there are 100 bulbs per set connected in serial connection, so each bulb gets 2.3 Volts.

Now I am sure that this is all according to the latest safety standards etc etc, but I have an uneasy feeling about having (potentially) 230V wires going all around the tree, with the kids hanging decorations... am I right to be concerned, or am i over-reacting?

Your advice will be appreciated.  :)

General Discussion Area / 'Pulse Generator'...?
« on: 07 January 2008, 12:16:19 »
These aftermarket front bearings cost £40 which is half price compared to Vx TC price. But what on earth is a 'Pulse Generator'? I replaced my bearongs not too long ago and the ones I got from Vx had nothing like the blue caps and wires that these ones have...

Do they mean ABS sensor? But the sensor is not part of the Bearing/Hub assembly, I was able to change the assmebley without touching the sensor...

Any idea...?
