PAS Fluid question
« on: 17 February 2008, 16:41:06 »

Checked the PAS fluid level today, level is correct but the stuff has a burnt smell to it...

So a fluid change may be in order (ATF Dexron-II iirc). But the question is if the PAS reservoir works like the brake fluid reservoir, i.e. it does not circulate in the system and changing just the fluid in the bottle will not help much, or is it circulating i.e. like the auto gearbox in which case I will get away with two or three reservoir-only ATF changes?

Problem is that in spite of the sunny day it is freezing cold, and I am trying to minimise my exposure to the elements so would prefer a quick job to a proper one...  :(

PAS reservoir does have a return line to it. :y

Haven't tried this but you might be able to run the return line into another container and, while keeping the reservoir topped up, run the engine until clean fluid emerges.

As Kevin has just suggested you can run of fluid just like a transfusion until it runs red, used this method some time ago, worked a treat.  :y

My fluid smells a bit too and looks very merky (ohh er).  I will try this 'transfusion' method at the w/end if i get chance.

Thought it was meant to be Dexron 3...or is that just the gearbox?

Just an aside:
I`m reasonably sure I saw (recently) the phrase "The specification for Dexron III makes it fully backwards compatible with Dexron II".....however, this was ONLY in connection with use in auto-transmissions.
Is that true?

I do know 'we' use the Dexron III spec. in our boxes (of course)....`just curious.  ;)
