General Car Chat / Understanding DPF issues
« on: 17 February 2024, 10:01:37 »
Hi all - not had too many car issues in recent years but just hoping to get a bit of a strange one sorted today.

The Insignia 2.0 diesel auto (2012 93000 miles) has variable revs when at idle which has gone a little worse over last 3 weeks so that you now get a slight hesitation - again only noticeable at idle. The DPF warning came up just before this (say 4 weeks ago) so we gave it a run but haven't done any longish runs since. Took it to independent yesterday who read codes and showing DPF 86% blocked and cylinder low pressure. As they could not do forced regeneration they asked my permission to do cylinder leak test to which I agreed and later in day they came back with no issues and that the fault appears to be one glo-plug (type which has pressure sensor). I had googled all of this and Insignia sites have a lot of posts where this idling issue is prevalent - some have changed loads of parts, others ignore it.

Hoping today brings result but not sure why diagnostic wouldn't go straight to glo-plug fault?

General Car Chat / AirCon regas frequency
« on: 26 August 2022, 09:48:24 »
I could not recall the Insignia ever having been regassed - went through bills etc - nothing. It is now 11 years old and AC working fine. Decided to have it done - they recovered 525g refrigerant but only 3g of oil. It took 600g  refrigerant and 13g oil. At 3g oil then it must have been close to leading to compressor damage. AC is running all the time which is apparently best for refrigerant efficiency. So waiting for car to stop blowing cold air as a decider  for regas may not be the best policy?

General Car Chat / Astra J - Weird electric behaviour
« on: 25 July 2022, 17:26:32 »
Been very quiet on car front and no real issues with Astra 2012 since I got it 7.5 years ago.  But on the very hot day last week instruments went haywire, codes could not be read as no communication with AA equipment. Abs and gearbox fault lights on. Taken to main dealer who having left it a few days as they were fully booked saying today car is driving normally and they can read codes and no faults showing. Battery tested,  alternator charging ok etc. They will test again tomorrow. Weird - told them to test on uphill as the problem seemed to happen when load placed on engine and transmission

General Discussion Area / Christmas Card

Cannot believe it - received seasons greetings card 15 minutes ago via postman. From friends in Spain. Maybe taking a pessimistic view on aspects of lock down?

General Car Chat / Mr Clutch
« on: 24 October 2020, 19:49:32 »
A mate of mine took his 2006 Land-rover Discovery to them as they were £1000 cheaper than dealer to replace clutch and flywheel. They messed him about for over a week and then it was finally ready. Seemed to be fine then clutch seized on motorway. Got it trailered back to Mr Clutch who are now saying it is transfer box (joint and centre bearing failure) that has caused problem. He has told them he doesn't believe them and now waiting for area manager to comment. Any thoughts as to whether their conclusion is reasonable?

General Car Chat / Astra - coolant level sensor.
« on: 16 September 2020, 11:52:35 »
need to replace faulty level sensor. Official method seems to remove battery and other bits but I have seen someone do it by just removing clip, jiggling around to create a bit of space and managing to disconnect lead and  unscrew level sensor and replace. Anyone done this job?

General Discussion Area / Help - it appears I have married a scouser
« on: 15 September 2020, 15:06:49 »
Just done a genealogy search for part of my wife's family and it is riddled with Sefton Park, Toxteth Park, Aigburth, Smithdown Road, Willow Bank Tavern, Birkenhead and more. Does this invalidate my marriage licence on grounds of misrepresentation - are there any grants available to deal with the misfortune?

General Discussion Area / Redundancies after furlough
« on: 15 September 2020, 15:02:05 »
Just helping my sister in law who is being made redundant this week from a dental practice after 26 years. Practice will not do the extended furlough and so we are at the end of the road with her current contract. The figures have now been put in writing which look fine other than holiday pay.

One thing I am not clear on is the employer wanting to make her take an enforced day's holiday which is trivial in the scheme of things particularly as she has not been brought back to work. In my view they have not given proper notice for this day holiday which was sent to her yesterday (although dated a few days previously) to be effective yesterday day and I think is in contravention of the Working Time Regulations 1998 on which so far they have failed to answer. Whilst it is minor i keep thinking I have missed a trick here but just cannot understand the pettiness. They offered her a new contract for one half day per week - which she turned down!!! If they have not made everyone else take a day off then is this discriminatory - employer has not answered this point either as yet?

General Discussion Area / Multimeter - continuity testing
« on: 10 September 2020, 12:12:30 »
A pond pump kept cutting out which means overheating and now will not work at all. Did a continuity test and it seems circuit is good - same with transformer. Am I making an error in trying to use multimeter for this purpose?

« on: 05 May 2020, 00:13:48 »
The 2 stroke hedge cutter has been a pain to start over the years. Got it going again today but there is clearly some knack to this but on line videos etc not a great help. After trying off and on during the day I just took the spark plug out and pulled the starter a few times, put plug back and it fired up. Filters clear and new fuel. Can anyone add any info as to why these seem to be such bad starters and any tips?

General Car Chat / Aircon - going to take a risk today
« on: 18 March 2020, 08:35:23 »
a) going out amongst human kind and others
b) having Halfords do an aircon diagnostic for £30

which is the bigger risk?

There is zero gas in there so must be a leak or compressor issue but compressor would not engage anyhow if no gas I think

General Car Chat / Shell diesel pump did not cut off
« on: 25 February 2020, 14:45:37 »
Just filled up - diesel pump did not cut off so spilled over car onto forecourt and over one shoe. Never happened to me before - reported it but got the impression they were not going to race out with sand. Bloody annoying - newish pumps as well.

Reading up a bit (and in the context of knowing enough to be dangerous) it seems that if you are running an up to date Windows 10 and have basic requirements (I use 365 and Office mainly) then there is no need to go for other security/antivirus products. Is that a fair assessment?
