MOT 6 month extension
« on: 01 April 2020, 21:23:29 »

Does the free 6 month extension to MOT's still apply if you sell your car?

I want to sell my old Citroen estate car but I'm not sure what to do as the test is due this month. Will I still be allowed to get it tested?

Most of the folk on here have had no problems getting their cars tested, Kate. The local garage here is still open and I see parts companies still delivering.

In the end, it's up to you. If mine needed an mot and I was thinking of selling it, I would get it done. You may think differently.

Unlike the VED the MoT doesn't expire with the sale of a car,so the extension should still apply to the vehicle even if sold.If you're selling it though[and even if keeping it]for peace of mind I think it would be better to get it Mot'd.

Probably not the best time to sell a car...  :-\

Probably okay if sold locally. But how would someone travel 50-200 miles to see/buy a car be classed as essential. Even though owning a car is essential. Probably a grey area.

In the current climate (hard to find buyers due to travel restrictions and some people being financially strapped) I reckon you'll be lucky to shift an old French car with 1 month's mot for much over scrap value.

Look at it from the buyer's point of view, if mot stations are open but you're relying on the extension, there are only 2 likely explanations. 1 you don't think it will pass, 2 you don't want to spend the money. 1 is obviously an issue, 2 would say to me that you haven't spent money on maintenance. Either way I wouldn't be buying.

There are plenty of cars out there wil long MOTs at under £500 so what would you realistically expect to get for one with no MOT? £1-200? If that's the case then I'd weigh it in for scrap and save yourself the trouble of having to deal with the costs and people involved in selling it.  :y

Things have changed this morning. The garage was shuttered when I drove past.

Joe public can as well.  Euroshite offering free deliveries via van to consumers currently, and key workers (which seems to cover anyone with a job) can walk into their shops.  Hellfrauds open.  All the mail order places open if you can wait until the next working day for the part. And so on.

Which means I have no excuse not to look at my caliper ;D

As long as I keep away from ebay and AliExpress, it all seems to be arriving mega quickly currently :).  Oh, and some Amazon stuff, that even with Prime, is 4 week delivery.

I did have a delay from a model shop, ordered last Friday, arrived on Thursday, but hardly a delay.

Its just fikkin' ebay. Full of 'tards and chancers.

That prime thing really pi$$es me off.

I have some SATA cables coming, that I now don't want because it will take 2 weeks for them to arrive.

Oh well, good to have spares and all that  ::)
