Title: Going to look at an 2.2 auto
Post by: Tomega69 on 27 October 2017, 18:23:12
Hello, as my title suggests I'm off to look at a 2002 petrol 2.2 Auto tomorrow.

It has fsh is well cared for and has done 86k, it is due a cambelt. General condition looks very good.

I'm after a comfortable relaxed cruiser.....hopefully this will fit the bill?

I wondered if anyone has any viewing advice? Things to look for and check etc?

Is the 2.2 unit a good one, I've read about bore wear and oil consumption on dishonest john!!!

any info and advice would be most welcome.

Thanks in advance, Tom.

hello and welcome to OOF :y Can't advize on 2.2's as I've never owned a 4 pot.Should be a comfy[if no rocket ship]cruiser,I believe 4 pots can be easier to work on-more room in the engine bay- than the V6's.When changing the cam belt/having it changed make sure the water pump is replaced at the same time as these are driven by the cam belt.Good luck with the purchase :y

They are a decent cruiser but won't blow your socks off, main weakness is the camshaft sensor which plays up but is not that expensive at £70 ish but must come from Vauxhall.  Check for rust inner front wings and rear sills and signs of head gasket failiure

Thanks for replies fellas.

Yes I'm not looking for performance, more comfort and reasonable economy, also being GM I'm hoping parts and maintainance to be fairly straightforward. I service all my own vehicles and would like to do as much on this car as possible, the cambelt actually looks quite easy.

Hello and welcome to the forum  :y. I have had a 2.2 CDX estate for 4 years. No problems, had cam belt done with water pump, cleaned out both front water drains at front, all as per advice on here  :y. A great car and runs really well  :y.

Had a 2.2 for over 10 years, took it to over 190k before I sold it. Probably best car I've owned, the 3.2 is starting to come close though.

The V6's have just effortless performance though.
