Title: radio loses signal with heated rear screen on
Post by: grifter on 15 December 2017, 07:28:49
As per title, the radio signal goes fuzzy when rear screen on. Take it some sort of earth problem perhaps. Am i right in saying the rear element is the aeriel?

It is indeed. I had this problem on a number of Omega saloons, never did cure it - although it never occurred in a strong signal area.

I just got used to switching the radio off until after the rear screen had done its stuff.

Moisture in the amplifier module... Once symptoms start, only cure is new replacement.

Another unintended consequence of not using aircon ::)

Being an estate, the amplifier is probably buried in a soggy spot in a rear quarter  ;)

First step is to clean the inside of the window.

And poor design! There is actually a general issue with ageing electronics being susceptible to moisture- apparently some of the black resin used to encapsulate chips etc can become porous with age!

From personal experience I cant say I have noticed the electronics being a common cause, the few I have seen were either a loose ground connection or an element fault.

With the heated rear screen on, are all bar showing signs of heating/clearing and all to a similar level?

I think so but will double check

Yep - most likely arcing at a small fracture in the screen element or a poor connection where the window attaches to the vehicle loom.
