General Car Chat / Re: Footpump
« on: 11 October 2020, 17:36:20 »
Trouble with most NEW stuff nowadays is that it's crap quality. If you want a foot pump then best bet would be to search for an older "new old stock" type or good used from eBay rather than a current model.or if you wanted to go down the compressor route than there are plenty of the manufacturers standard supplied models which are usually better quality than the motor shop stuff.for around £20 ish

Omega General Help / Re: Brake pad not contacting whole disc face
« on: 09 October 2020, 11:15:52 »
True, it does make 'sod all difference' to the life of the disc, that is why I said 'if only' to avoid the premature rusting...... but the main point is from an asthetics point of view. The wider the gap between the alloy wheel spokes, the large rusted area is there to see which in my opinion looks unsightly. If you own a car for merely travelling from A to B and have no pride in your car whatsover, then you won't be bothered. But I, for one, are proud of my vehicles appearance, whether than be an Omega or any other more modern vehicle with alloys, and there is no question about it - rusted 'top hats' on brake discs that are clearly visible through the spokes of the rim are unsightly. On the other hand, if you are in the now minority with steel wheels covered by plastic wheel trims, then this is less likely to be a 'visual' issue to the owner.

absolutely agree. i made the mistake myself after buying new discs for mine and ended up removing them again and using vht silver paint on the hubs and unswept part and edges.it doesnt last as long as proper coated discs as mentioned but looks ok .they are just starting to show some rusting thou but at nearly 5 years and 5000 miles it will be a while till they need changing !

and yes in reply to the above.they will bed in and become shiny all across .the sooner the better driving wise thou so the rust doesnt get a hold .once pitted they stay pitted !

Is that not the vacuum for the fuel pressure regulator valve ?
That would definately cause weird running and mixture issues ?

Omega General Help / Re: Is there an online Vx spares catalogue?
« on: 03 October 2020, 11:22:33 »
Likewise and nowadays everything (and I mean virtually everything!) I ever need I buy from eBay. I know a few people don't like eBay but I find everything I want does pop up eventually for rare stuff and everyday stuff is always there. It seems my entire house and car parts have come from eBay over the years.
. Cannot remember the last time I went into a diy shop or car shop for stuff.
That's my answer anyway. No offence intended to anyone else !

Omega General Help / Re: Play at steering wheel
« on: 02 October 2020, 22:21:33 »
you will always have a small amount of play in a steering box compared to a rack but this should be minimal and not something that has "suddenly" appeared and especially with the noise as well.
should be easy enough to find but start at the begginning. make sure the steering wheel movement is all being transferred down to the uj by the pedals.if not we could be talking loose steering wheel, top bearing ,adjuster/tilt mechanism uj .
the visible uj by the pedals should have no play and be tight on its shafts.
with a bit of care and patience you should be able to find where the lost movement is .nice if its an external joint or the idler ,less so if its the box itself or inside the column.

Omega General Help / Re: V6 top end rattle
« on: 29 September 2020, 20:16:08 »
its just that noises dont always originate from where they sound to be and at least you would eliminate any belt driven items then.
other possibility of course is cambelt pulley bearings .you mentioned a grating sound whereas lifters usually tick or have a tapping noise

have you tried running it briefly with the aux belt removed just to confirm its not alternator, air con or power steering .or even the aux tensioner pulley

There is one on eBay at the moment but you've probably seen it.it doesn't look top condition and possibly a bit expensive due to this.
What's wrong with yours .?

Omega General Help / Re: Changing head gasket - locking tools?
« on: 14 September 2020, 17:47:54 »
just be logical and carefully work your way through everything.
did it run just before you did the work or are we talking a couple of years ago ?
if you have got photos of cams and your own markings then check these first to make sure you have the correct cams in the correct place and the pulleys on the front of the cams in the correct place .be 100% sure, just take your time and compare what you used as reference.
then make 100% sure that the belt and pulleys are timed up correctly. turn the engine to nearly tdc,fit the crank tool and carefully bring up to tdc.make sure top alignment tool shows everything ok.tweak if required and then finally check tension wheel marker pointer.turn the engine a couple more times and recheck .
watch club dvd ,youtube videos or whatever method of your choice to be sure everything is ok.
then personally i would crank the engine over with fuel pump and injector relays removed to make sure it "sounds right" if you know what i mean.you should have an evenly spinning engine with no unusual slow spots or fast spots just a normal sounding engine with even compression strokes.
after this its a case of :
are the plugs ok
are the leads ok
is coil ok and firing order correct
is the fuel pressure good, fuel new, filter ok
is everything plugged back in as and where it should be
all air hoses, vacuum hoses, servo hose connection
basically checking everything is back to where it was before you started the job
this list is largely dependant on your answer to the first question thou !
