Omega General Help / V6 oil pan drain plug
« on: 16 April 2016, 14:21:13 »
So - last two MOTs have had advisories of an oil leak from the engine. Turns out that the leak is due to the oil pan rusting through from the outside.

I did enquire about a new oil pan from VX after the first MOT advisory but I didn't bother ordering one at the time because I thought it would be easy to get a used one from someone on OOF. Turns out it wasn't that easy and the only one I was offered had a drain plug stuck in it.

I already knew that the drain plugs are very soft so I took a chance and acquired it.

Phase 1 - drill out the plug

The job was made easier because GM have thoughtfully provide a dimple in the centre of the plug  :y but became more difficult with the larger sized drill bits when the plug started spinning in the oil pan........
before

after

Phase 2 is to clean up the thread in the bush.

Phase 3 is to rub / wire brush some surface rust off and give it a lick of paint.

Phase 4 involves buying a tube of grey 'glueing sealant' and actually fitting it.

Car Parts, bits For Sale & Wanted / Wanted - V6 oil pan
« on: 25 March 2016, 20:05:16 »
As above.

I need the steel oil pan for my 2003 2.6 V6 Elite.

I think the oil pan is the same for all the V6s but I don't have access to TIS so may be completely wrong. The Elites have an oil level sensor - not sure if all V6s do :-\

The operation of the audio controls on the steering wheel has become intermittent. If they don't respond then turning the wheel slightly gets them working again.

I haven't had to take the steering wheel off this car (yet). Are the steering controls wired through the squib with the air bag?

General Discussion Area / Washing Machine
« on: 20 December 2015, 14:57:15 »
Not a good time for the current machine to rip a concrete weight off and drop it on the floor.

It is a Hotpoint Ultima 1400. It has been a good machine but it needs a new plastic tub (and probably a new lump of concrete) and they cost about £170 from what I can see on the internet.

Went and picked up some presents from Argos earlier and they have basic white Hotpoint machines at around £210.

With one little one in washable nappies (and another due in February) it gets used almost daily and the 1400 spin makes a big difference to getting stuff dry afterwards.

Any comments? It is difficult to get excited about household appliances. The £1200 Samsungs look quite nice but I can't believe they are that much more effective and whatever we buy is going to be stuffed until the door barely shuts despite anything I dare say about it being overloaded  >:(

Omega General Help / Thrust washer?
« on: 04 December 2015, 14:04:40 »
Omega 2.6 Elite saloon. 210,000 miles.

Reverse is taking an age to engage. I changed the ATF last year, I didn't find anything unusual in the sumps and the fluid didn't look or smell burnt.

Any ideas? All the forward ratios engage as expected and it doesn't misbehave if I give it a good ragging :-\

I also have a mystery whine but I cannot decide whether it is gearbox or, diff (or maybe wheelbearing). The whine changes with load so I don't believe it is wheel bearing.

Omega General Help / Alloy Wheels - flaking paint - losing pressure
« on: 03 December 2015, 22:14:40 »
Late Elite alloys, Particularly where the wheels have been curbed the paint is flaking and corrosion has got under the paint.

It didn't cause a problem (other than looking rough) until about year ago when I started to notice that I had to keep adding air to one front tyre.

Last time I had new tyres fitted some paint fell off one of the rims so that rim got a good wire brushing to remove the loose paint. That wheel seems to be holding pressure but now two of the other wheels are leaking.

Has anyone had good results with professional wheel refurbishment? The process would involve stripping the paint and sticking the rim in a lathe to skim the tyre seat followed by repainting.

General Car Chat / Galaxy variable vane turbocharger - oil feed
« on: 17 July 2015, 19:18:52 »
What was meant to take me 1 day last weekend has taken 3 days so far. I hadn't realised that to get the turbo out I would need to dismantle the inlet system at the back of the engine from above and the exhaust system from below. Access isn't great and everything seemed to be seized. :(

Got the turbo on the bench today and managed to get the bolts out with a struggle. Splitting the turbo was easier than expected which revealed a fairly clean mechanism with just enough rust and carbon to stop the vanes from moving freely. Cleaned it all and put it back together and it now works smoothly again :y

Now I have got the turbo back in the car I want to prime the oil feed without starting the engine. Filling the oil pipe with a syringe appears nigh on impossible, I can barely see the pipe let alone get a syringe to it  :(

What I intend to do is crank the engine on the starter until oil appears from the return pipe of the turbo. What is the safest way to do this? Can I just unplug the injector harness as I have seen suggested elsewhere?

The engine is an AUY 1.9 tdi PD. It has injectors actuated by the camshaft but controlled by the ECU.

General Car Chat / Anti seize grease/paste
« on: 12 July 2015, 22:25:09 »
Any recommendations?

I have been using copper grease for years on exhaust bolts and it works but it leaves a filthy mess. It also works  on threads exposed to water/coolant but I don't think it has any anti-corrosion properties :-\

Does any one know of anything better/newer/cleaner?

I have spent 2 days undoing masses of partially seized nuts to get the turbo off SWMBO's Galaxy. The job should have taken 2 hours (allegedly).

I will definitely be putting something on all the threads to stop them seizing again but I think there must be something cleaner than copper grease :-\

General Discussion Area / Wireless phone charging
« on: 09 July 2015, 20:54:57 »
It struck me as a solution to a problem that doesn't exist using technology that attempts to defy the laws of physics.

I bought one because my new phone has an awkward waterproof cover over the charging socket that appears designed to break and I don't want to spend 5 minutes fiddling with it every time I get into the car.

I thought it was working for me but I changed my opinion today :(

General Car Chat / Where to buy parts for Garahambra?
« on: 19 April 2015, 12:16:16 »
SWMBO has just bought a 2002 Ford Galaxy.

VW designed the Sharan and SEAT built them in Spain. They were then badged as Ford Galaxy, VW Sharan or SEAT Alhambra.

Do Ford have an equivalent to TradeClub?

I think the parts are pretty much interchangeable - don't know if SEAT or VW would be a better place to buy service parts?

General Discussion Area / Bronchiolitis
« on: 03 April 2015, 13:17:48 »
Never heard of it before this week. On Monday baby had a cold, Tuesday SWMBO took her to the docs for a check up, Wednesday took her back because she was struggling to breathe.

We spent the rest of the day in the Childrens Assessment Unit at the local hospital until we could get enough fluids into her to be allowed home.

The steel oil pan on the sump of my 2.6 V6 Facelift engine has a stone chip which has rusted and is now weeping oil.

Mine has a bracket for the oil level sensor (if that makes any difference).

My Omega is missing the cover that goes round the interior mirror & hides the rain sensor & wiring.

The drivers door mirror motors still work but they have lost their memory.

Can anybody help with any of the above?
