Omega General Help / AR25 Level Plug - can't shift it
« on: 14 March 2015, 15:08:52 »
Is it a left hand thread?

The sump is off - I have tried heat and holding what is left of the head in a vice but I just cannot shift it  >:(

General Car Chat / Tax in the post.......
« on: 26 September 2014, 14:25:22 »
Just paid £285 on line for road tax starting 1st October.

Under the new regulations I don't need to display a tax disk so therefore they won't put one in the post ::)

Really not sure I am comfortable with a system where the penalty for not taxing & insuring is having your car crushed but they can't be bothered to send me something tangible to acknowledge that I have jumped through all the hoops >:(

General Discussion Area / Which Battlebus for 4 adults & 2 babies?
« on: 25 August 2014, 14:25:55 »
Since my stepdaughter gave birth last Christmas she has been talking about getting a cheap Seat Alhambra. Following another arrival 3 weeks ago  :) we now have to take 2 cars everywhere.

The discussions about Zaffys and Orlandos are interesting but I think I need to be looking at one of the larger MPVs if we are all going to fit in one vehicle (along with 2 pushchairs and all the other stuff that seems to be essential for a modern child).

What experiences do people have of the Alhambra (or VW Sharan / Ford Galaxy)

General Car Chat / Daily commute
« on: 23 July 2014, 17:21:15 »
Even on a 'bad' day getting to work in Cornwall is a more pleasant experience than a 'good' day on the M25.

Today was a 'good' day ;)

General Discussion Area / Aldi air compressor & accessories
« on: 02 May 2014, 15:50:31 »
Back in December Aldi had one of their promotions so I wandered over in my lunch hour & bought an impact wrench and a blister pack with an assortment of tyre inflators and jets.

I didn't recognise the quick release coupling but I wasn't bothered because I have some spare PCL connectors. It was only recently that I unscrewed the coupler from the air jet & discovered that they have used some random thread & neither 1/4 or 5/16 BSP will fit  >:(

I haven't seen that type of quick release coupling anywhere else. If I could find one I would make up a short hose with Aldi quick release one end and a PCL probe the other.

Does anyone know how often Aldi get air tools in? or where else sells that type of quick release? or even what the parentage of that blasted thread is??

Omega General Help / Where to buy ATF for auto box fluid change?
« on: 21 April 2014, 22:28:14 »
As above really. Having looked into what is available I really don't want to go and buy nine 1 litre bottles at £12 each. I also don't want to fill the box with something that has too many friction modifiers (resulting in clutch slip followed by scrap gearbox).

A bit of history
What we know as the AR25/AR35 is really the 4L30E which was used in all sorts of cars including BMWs, Isuzi and various 4 wheel drive vehicles including the Frontera.

The 4L30E  was an evolution of the 3 speed TH180/3L30 which was first built in the late 1960s.

The 3L30 would have used original Dexron which was made using sperm whale oil.

Dexron 2 was a mineral oil launched in 1972. Dexron 3 was launched in 1993. Dexron 4 was launched in 2006 (so after Omega production ended).

From what I can see on the internet the 4L30E doesn't cope well with oils newer than Dexron 3. GM used to licence manufacture of Dexron3 but that ended in 2006.

Car Parts, bits For Sale & Wanted / Wtd: Rain sensitive wiper module.
« on: 16 February 2014, 21:01:50 »
Mine works but doesn't seem to be as sensitive as it should be.

If anyone is breaking a car with rain sensitive wipers I could do with the module from the screen below the interior mirror.

I'm also missing the two part plastic trim that hides the module and wiring.

Omega General Help / Water vs Gearbox Selector Switch
« on: 05 February 2014, 21:02:21 »
Given how wet it has been in Cornwall I suppose it was inevitable :-\

Drove home from from work on monday through 2" of snow, slush and running water. Drove both ways yesterday through torrential rain. Arrived at work this morning to find the carpark under 2 inches of salt water (so I swiftly exited said car park and found somewhere slightly above sea level to park)

Got home this evening, selected park and all the indicator lights came on >:(

180 mile round trip tomorrow. What are the chances of the box behaving itself ?

Omega General Help / Ticking when cold
« on: 02 February 2014, 22:47:44 »
For some time now I have had a slight ticking noise when the engine is cold. It never lasted more than a minute but in that minute it became louder if I pressed the throttle.  It didn't seem to be getting any worse & I couldn't find an obvious cause.

Other people have reported something similar and the consensus seemed to be that it was probably an exhaust manifold gasket that sealed itself as soon as some heat got into the manifold.

Yesterday I changed the spark plugs. No 5 coil looks a little rusty, No 6 plug well has some water stains, No 3 rubber boot has a brown stain on the outside which I assumed was evidence of water ingress.

When I took the plugs out No 3 was already partially unscrewed. They have been in for 70,000 miles. I remember someone (probably AndyB or MarksDTMCalib) saying that they can come loose after 30k.

I started the car from cold this morning and didn't hear any ticking. I suspect that I have had a loose plug for the last 30k miles  :(

Omega General Help / Spark Plugs - Torque setting?
« on: 01 February 2014, 22:12:01 »
Just changed mine.

Found that plug no3 had worked itself loose. :(

When I put the new ones in I couldn't find a recommended torque setting so I nipped them up and then gave them another 60 degrees (because it felt 'right').

Is there a 'correct' torque setting?

Omega General Help / Replacement springs for Elite
« on: 26 January 2014, 10:06:35 »
As above really.

Not interested in changing the ride, I just want to replace the broken rear spring on my 2003 Elite saloon. It has self levelling suspension & I will be changing them as a pair.

Last time I looked genuine springs were astonishingly expensive. Is there a current 'best buy' for replacements?
