Different antennas
« on: 14 June 2016, 13:53:45 »

Looking at a few subjects here on antennas for a estate I found that we have a few different ones to choose from.

Mine is quite rotten on the car and radio reception is really poor so I decided to change the antenna. Ordered one from a scrapyard that was from an 2001 estate.

But when opening up and going to do the change I see that the one on my car is different than the one I got to replace it with.

Here is how it looks in my car, two coax-cables to the base.

And this is the one I got, would apparently not work.

What models should I look for to get the proper one, my car doesn't have the GPS or factory phone, just a CDR 2005 unit. Apparently it is prepared for more than a radio being a 3.2 V6 Estate "Elegance"

Thanks

The antenna you got from the scrapyard will work with the system already in place.... it will be a straight forward swap, just don't connect the smaller co-ax....

OK, thanks for the info. I see that the connectors are a little different. But what about the other lead on the replacement one, is it a ground wire?

Thanks

There is your issue!

The original has GPS and or GSM both of which supply a DC feed via coax.

The replacement is FM only and has a separate 12V feed to power the inbuilt antenna amplifier.

So unless you can get DC to the extra wire, switched via the radio, the reception will most likely be very poor.

Well, if that is to power an antenna amplifier I guess it would be easier to put one at the radio end. Such amplifiers are easy to find in any car stereo supplier shop.

I mean just then leave that power cable as it is. It would be easier than to try to install a cable over the inner roof cover.

Thanks

I did change the antennas and discovered that the one I put in had a lower angle than the old one. This one hits the spoiler badly but I can live with it. The old one was more straight up and didn't touch the spoiler.

Reception on the radio is a lot better now even without hooking up the amplifier. I will though add one at the radio end of the cable.
