DVLA - Change of keeper - how long???
« on: 03 February 2017, 10:54:25 »

So... James delivered the MV6 to me in mid December and my intention was to SORN it over Christmas then tax &insure it January. One way or another it has taken till now to get around to sorting out insurance quotes but I still don't have the V5 from DVLA so I thought I ought to try declaring SORN online.

This is what comes up  :( so I have to assume that they lost the change of keeper slip that James sent them  >:(

Unable to use service

Unfortunately you cannot use this service yet as the previous keeper of the vehicle has not told DVLA that you are the new keeper.
You should either:

Wait until you receive the V5C vehicle registration certificate (log book) in your name, and then use the reference number from it to make a SORN online
or complete the forms V890 (make a Statutory Off Road Notification), V62 (application for a vehicle registration certificate) and send with your V5C/2 to DVLA Swansea.

When we changed address last May, both V5C's were back within a fortnight.

Same for us, a couple of V5C's being changed for various reasons since Sept 2016, new car purchase, sale of car, change of keeper. In all 3 cases, either the V5C or confirmation of transfer (for the car we sold) were back in about 2-3 weeks tops.

Sounds like something might be up  :-\

Normally around 14 days, sometimes up to a month, fairly common for the whole thing to drop off or gets lost in the system though.

Had the same when I sold my elite estate, they said they had not received the form so I called and then had to send them a letter, buggers still had £50 of tax out of my bank which I have never had back. Even after them sending me the slip to say I am no longer the owner for the correct date.

DVLA either lost the V5 I posted to them when I sold a car 12 months or so ago or the RM lost it.....

Either way it was a lot of messing about to get it sorted.....I had to write to them informing them I had sold it and who to....
The buyer had to send a form off...V7 something I think.....

6 months later ish it was sorted......however I never got the 5 months car tax back that was left on it when I sold it....but didn't chase it, as I knew the new owner hadn't taxed it, as he didn't have the V5 (which I don't think you have to have to tax it) but didn't want him to get a nasty surprise in the post for an untaxed vehicle.

The DVLA sent me a reminder that my Omega wasn't insured, was a letter with th letter head having the ASKMID name at the top....

It went something like 'According to ASKMID.COM you are the registered keeper of Vauxhall Omega ..... it shows it isn't insured and is an offence to continue to use a vehicle on the road without relevant insurance etc....'

Thought nothing of it, me thinking its the ASKMID website trying scare tactics or something, so ignored it...

3 Months later I get a letter from DVLA stating that I have been given a £100 fine for not insuring my car (but it was showing as taxed)....

This was just before Christmas 2016...

I scrapped my Omega back in August last year so obviously it wont be insured... I told them I had scrapped it when I sent off the rlevant paperwork to say my Omega is now gone for scrap....

I had to send proof to them of where it was being scrapped, who scrapped it, which company etc....

I sent them as much proof as I could find, including a picture of it on the back of a flatbed truck with no wheels on it, no front or rear bumper and no interior with a date stamp of 1/8/2016....

They casually wrote back to inform me that the fine has be removed and the car is now registered as a scrap vehicle....

oppswits...!!!

When I bought the V70 we filled in and sent off the relevant paperwork after some weeks[at least a couple of months]DVLA got in touch with lad I bought it from and said they couldn't read the writing on the relevant bits of the V5,so could he get in touch with the buyer[me] and get them to apply for a new V5-paying £25 for the priviledge which they'd then refund when it was all sorted out-so new V5 applied and paid for this arrived inside a fortnight-I'm still waiting for the refund :D

Hi Andy,

I sent them a registered letter today to inform them to get their arse into gear :y (And to cover my arse, for when they kindly try and fine me for "not informing them of a change of keeper".

Believe me, it's in my best interests, as the b@stards are still charging me the tax each month, to date!

Thanks James
It hasn't caused me a problem (yet) but it feels like a cynical ploy to keep the revenue coming in when a car is legitimately off road but between owners  >:(
