Anyone know of a good web site-easy to follow one for a computer numpty like me-where I might be able to find information on a portrait painter? I am custodian[for want of a better word]of two large portraits of two of my forebears one painted in 1866 and the second was painted in 1869.Just thought it might be interesting to see if I can find anything about the artist who was called William Mackie.Oddly [to me at least]he signed the first one as W.Mackie whereas on the second he signed it using the full William as opposed to just the initial.

No information on the artist, and it's not a portrait, but is the signature the same. If it is then at least it's a start for you

Sadly it doesn't appear to be the same from what I could make of the one on your link.On my portraits the letter w looks like two Vs joined together and the rest of the signature is spelt out in separate letters.Thanks for the try though :y

Might be worth fostering a relationship with a local museum or one in. London perhaps with a photo via Email. I have found them fantastically helpful. Last item was a “scrimshaw” lampbase made from whale vomit (ambergris) by a forebear.

Yes and yes. A narwhal tusk too. For years I also had a large piece of baleen but it had to go.
