Rear driveshaft bolts.
« on: 30 July 2018, 19:40:05 »

Hi all,
Another Greenhorn her to this forum. I'm hoping you can give us a hand on this query I have (not a slap  ;)). I have an omega 2.2 16v estate auto 2003. Need to remove the the rear diff for inspection, also as the driveshaft and prop pinion oil seals are leaking/gone. So need to replace them. I just wanted to ask if I have to replace the rear driveshaft to hub bolts with new ones, think 6 each side?
As went to Vauxhall and they said don't stock them anymore, typically.
Are there bolts from a similar Vauxhall that would work?
While I'm asking this question are there any other bolts that should be replace with new, when removing the diff, e.g prop bolts etc?

Many thanks if you can help chaps  :y

Never done such a thing on an Omega but on others I've always re-used prop bolts and such.Another thing to watch for/check would be the state of the diff mounts as I believe these can be something of a weak point[especially if the car has ever been jacked up using the diff].Welcome to OOF by the way :y

Not to throw a spanner in the works, but didn't someone (Shack, maybe?) have driveshaft-to-hub bolts work loose after re-using them?

Entwood iirc, but equally I have reused (with threadlock) to no ill effects  ;)

Or maybe Entwood. Entwood, Shack.. who can tell them apart? ;D But, an isolated incident AFAIK - just thought it worth mentioning  :y

It's generally unwise to re-use any bolt that has a tightening spec of X Nm + Y degrees. This virtually always takes them to or past yield.

That's not to say I haven't reused such bolts, especially if they're in easy to access places, like prop or drive shafts.  ::)

I have had the diveshaft bolts on the Westfield come loose after being disturbed - it's a Sierra diff, but pretty much the same setup. They're now a bit tighter, with some thread lock, and haven't given more problems.

Ahh that is a relief, I shall reuse them with a lot of threadlock. Thanks very much for your help & info guys :y
I hope all is well within the diff when I have look. We had a slight issue with the car before we found this leak. Sometimes when driving we'd feel a bump, felt like from more to the rear of car, you know like it was slipping in drive then a bump felt and then driving normal again.
Any ideas on this?
I don't think it's from the engine as feels more from front seats to the rear.

Using more threadlock doesn't make it work any better.

As for your bump, have you looked at the rear diff mounts? Actually, looking at them won't show much, you need to undo the bolts that attach to the car.
