2002 Omega 3.2 Elite Suspension
« on: 13 November 2018, 14:35:05 »

Hi all

I am after some help following my Omega failing it's MOT yesterday  :'(

It's a 2002 3.2 Elite with 98k miles

The rear right hand Self levelling Shock absorber is leaking and needs replacement, I can find lots of shocks available but not one that suits the self levelling Omega.

Any guidance on what to do here or where I could get one? (or a pair if that is better)

Thanks all

In my experience main dealers only to obtain new ones, and not cheap, especially as you should really change both at the same time. Plus side is... it's not too bad a job to do !!

According to the invoice the part number was (in 2010 @  97717 miles .. now at 175500 odd) -  72119084 and they were £116.00 each .. but 8 years later .. I hate to think !

I actually "only" paid £147.00 for the pair as they were avaialble on "trade club" back then at a decent discount .....  :)

I have a 2002 3.2 Elite, I just run standard shocks on the back of mine  :y

Always replace suspension components in pairs, never just one side.  :)

Yep, easy enough to change to standard shocks, and probably the best option if you don't tow regularly but you do need to disable the levelling system by removing the compressor relay in the fuse box.

A pair of self levelling rear shocks for my 3.2 Elite estate cost me £309 last week.  :'(  They had to be shipped from Germany so I had to wait a week for them to arrive at Vauxhall dealership. I tried to find an alternative but with no luck. I need the levelling capability.
Is it a saloon or estate, I have part numbers if it's an estate.

Thank you all for the help here, it's a Saloon - But if standard shocks are easy enough to get and fit I will go that way and remove the compressor relay as suggested.
I don't tow anything

Any decent shocks recommended?

The shocks don't really matter; anything will do.

But although stock shocks are a straight bolt-on replacement for the self-levelling ones, you will also need to upgrade the springs as well. That reduces the cash saving(how much will depend on where you source the springs) and increases the amount of work involved.

That's an important point. The springs that are fitted with s/l shocks are too soft to use with any other dampers.
I replaced mine with Sachs springs, which Im quite pleased with.
Some people recommend Bilstein dampers. Others don't. Doctor Gollum should be along soon with advice. He has a fair amount of experience with these things.  :y

I cannot remember what springs went on the 3.2  :-[

Back in 2012 they were fitted I think, with standard shocks. Still good and only minor corrosion seen, it’s handling just way I want to now. Super soft ride  :)

That said, maybe it appears super soft as day before I’m usually in a BMW M140i.

Two choices...

1. Put your hands in your pockets and buy genuine self levelling shocks.

2. Buy a pair of Sachs standard shocks, (£80ish a pair) along with Kilen HD springs, (£60ish a pair).

Also, if your self levelling works, I would personally go with option 1, but if you do want to go the cheap route, then remove the system in it's entirety without chopping anything as the parts will soon be obselete. It can also be retrofitted to another car.

If you don't do your own spannering then I can do it for you. Labour cost would only be to fit the new shocks/springs... The old system I would remove FOC on the condition that I keep it. ;)
