Astra radio gone into DISPLAY SAFE mode
« on: 05 December 2018, 12:14:01 »

I have a LIFE spec Astra with a radio CD and a DESIGN spec with radio CD MP3. The DESIGN spec car has a dead engine, and I want to swap radios. I have done so, but a message comes up saying DISPLAY SAFE. I have the car pass and so the radio code; can I reset things?, and, if so, how?

You need to swap the display as well  ;)

Also need the code due to battery disconnect...

Thanks. How do I change the display? Haynes does not tell me.

Correction, Haynes does describe how to remove the information display unit, but it is not attached to the instrument panel, as on Omegas.
The MP3 radio unit did replace the CD unit all right, it did power up, seek 6 radio channels, and play one of them, and the CD player worked too. However it did not identify the channel played, just said DISPLAY SAFE. Packing 25 CDs on to an MP3 disc would be little use without identication.

As the Astra brochure stated, the lower spec Astras do not have aircon, cruise, or MP3 Infotainment. This car is an estate, something else I did not notice when I bought it. As Nick W said, buying a 10 year old car for under £1000, a man buys on engine, mileage, MOT remaining and price.

Being an estate won't have any bearing on the radio fitted ;D

Has your brochure arrived?

Life spec does not even have steering wheel controls or driver information system IIRC, so you'd probably have to swap looms and screen and probably enable in ecu etc etc  .
probably a lot less hassle to buy a facia adapter and after market radio IF playing music is THAT important  :-\

No, it's not important at all. This car is for my daughter, who rarely plays CDs or tapes in her Omega. I regret losing the 2004 car and thought if enabling the MP3 was simple it would be worth doing. She does not use cruise, or aircon even if she has it. She will aprreciate the much better fuel economy of the Astra, and the ease of parking a smaller car.
