Extraction !! Of Engine
« on: 06 August 2006, 10:08:46 »

Folks

As above - not strictly Omega related - more Generic  ;)

About to remove an engine from another rover. Done this once and was a pain as i used a rather unorthadox method  ;D
In the market for an engine hoist...

does anyone have an engine crane that they can recommend i buy?

also for todays normal cars, up to lets say a 3.0 mv6 omega, would a one ton suffice or should i always go for an two ton crane?

ive been looking at a retailer on ebay selling genuine sealey cranes as below

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BRAND-NEW-SEALEY-PH20-2-TON-FOLDING-ENGINE-CRANE-HOIST_W0QQitemZ150017507333QQihZ005QQcategoryZ108783QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

any thoughts would be highly appreciated!!

I can't talk from experience but the front wheels of the hoist obviously need to go under the front of the car and the Sealy hoist looks quite tall with the type of castor that's just bolted to the bottom.

This type looks to be shallower and able to fit under the car better.

I've got a 2.5 tonne Valley hoist with 6 dolly's, on full extension it could take an engine out of the boot of an omega  ;D

Looks just like the one in the ebay auction!

I think you shouild go for the heaciest duty hoist yu can Markie. Remember you also want a good reach too.

And yes, Sealy are a good make.

Having worked on an Omega with what was a big engine crane , we found it didn't actualy reach far enough!

You also need to look at the reach v weight setup on them as the weight handling decreases rapidly as you extend the reach...

That said, most modern engines rarely exceed 200-250Kg (unless you aheva  V12 jag or a 2.5TD!).

That ebay one does look good though.

Watch out, on many modern (that excludes the Rover then!) front wheel drive cars you have to take the engine out the bottom of the engine bay......

I bought the same one last year (1 ton)from the same company they were brilliant - it was here within a couple of days - one part was missing - the handle to pump it up - emailed them and they sent me a replacement part.

The hoist works well with V6 engines (170kg) and it has a crude brake arangement to stop it sliding around. I use it with a load adjuster - this was also from ebay for £25 -this alters the pivot point so you can adjust the angle which makes life easier!!!
