Scraping large hi-res off digi-vid-cam.
« on: 09 October 2006, 12:05:15 »

Off topic, but can you help?

I have a Sony Handicam and want to 'extract' some stills from the footage.

I need them to be about 800x600, but the I can't find any way to re-size the picture with Imagemixer stuff app I use, (I got it with the camera). the pics that come off are more like 300x250.

Any tips?

TIA!

Download a trial of Ulead video studio and save the frame as a still

You will get 720x568

Thanks Martin, I'll give that a try.

I don't know if the restriction is due to the camera itself though, but I'll see.

I assume that's USB compatible then yeah?

You need to use Firewire / IEE1394 to download from the camera to the PC, then that can be editied or frames grabbed.

You do mean frames and not flash memory stills don't you as with UK SDTV the resolution IS 720x568 for DV

Well, the lead I have plugs into what I thought was a USB socket and I can view the contents of the tape on the PC using the ImageTransfer app that I was supplied with. The app' even says USB on it, so do I have out of date hardware/software or is the app' telling me lies? OR do I need a new lead/computer?  ::)

Yes, I do mean frames Martin. I made the mistake of buying a digicam with stills capability but without a memory card. It uses 10 seconds of the tape to store 'stills'.

Sounds like a low res USB transfer - not a reliably fast enough for DV, so you need a firewire port - go into COntrol Panel, System, Device Manager and see if you have IEEE 1394 controllers, if not the cards are about a tenner or so - mines on the sound card!!!!.

You will also need the lead, camera to PC.

Sorry not AFAIK

For full resolution DV (including stills) it is IEEE 1394 - what model is the camera - I have a DC-TRV33

Lead now on order too!! They are quite different.

TBH, all I know is it's a Sony handycam. It's about three years old. It does me, but I've never tried anything more adventurous than recording and playing the tapes through the TV.

Thanks for the help Martin!!  ;)

No problem, you ought to look at a basic editing package and show your films on DVD
