50W HIDs?
« on: 19 November 2008, 15:30:57 »

Anybody had any experience with these? As they are only 50W I presume they would be ok on the existing wiring (50w/55w halogen?) are they ok physically with the headlight units (ie heat) and are they legal?

Also, has anybody had any experience with H7 HID conversions? Same questions as above really!

Just did a search on Ebay and found these (for instance)

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HID-XENON-CONVERSION-KIT-H4-H8-H9-H10-9006-5OW-6000K_W0QQitemZ190268078281QQihZ009QQcategoryZ72235QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

They are HID's but higher power so presumably brighter (maybe illegal then?)

Any HID conversion kit is illegal to use on UK roads.

I disagree with the boy, 3 years ago i had a bmw e30 cabs that i restored i fitted it with original bmw HID XENON units ,and when i came to sell it the DVLA had it inspected at it passed with no mention of the lights and trust me when the DVLA inspect a car they dont miss a trick,so unsure why any kits would be illegal when a lot of cars now have them fitted as standard

OEM HIDs are legal to retrofit (if done properly with washers and levelling).  Conversion kits are not, even if you already have washers and levelling, as the lenses have not been approved for HID use.

I couldnt comment on the lenses, but im sure people would use their common sense and only fit them to lights that were glass units,if what you say is true then im suprised that ebay and other retailers allow the sale of these kits without the seller having a warning in place on the ad,ive seen many of these kits advertised and not once have i noticed any such admissions, the only thing that is said that above a certain k and light colour should only be used for show/offroad purposes

All Omega lenses are plastic, not that that matters.  Its the fact that HID ones have been designed and tested for hid use.

All sorts of things are illegal to use, but legal to sell.  I guess the sellers could always use the 'only intended for offroad' type use ;)
