If the Out Going emails are working ok on your Hone Network but not when Roaming Wifi, sounds like a Out Going Authentication issue, check your Out Going Settings are correct, outgoing server name is correct, try with and without email name and passwords, is there a tick box to authenticate out going mail or similar, or something like use Incoming settings.

is there a tick box to authenticate out going mail or similar: No, only for incoming.

try with and without email name and passwords: Already tried.

or something like use Incoming settings: No

Thks. :y
Is your email address the same as whats in the server box, I dont much about Plusnet but guessing something like this, john.smith@plus.net or john.smith@plusnet.com, then the server would be simular ie incoming may be mail.plus.net, outgoing send.plus.net

are you using pop3 or imap, should all be imap these days, whats the imap outgoing server, ie, assuming its xxxx.plus.net you try and change this to smtp.plus.net

also try a 'reply' to a valid inbox mail message, rather than create new/compose new message. does that still fail.

Outgoing is relay.plus.net as required by Plusnet.

Reply to a msg does not work, and receives "rejected by server" msg.
Did you try changing this to smtp.plus.net as suggested.

Could also be port settings, default is probably port 25 which can get blocked by some carriers.

No point at present as I am using it on my home wifi, do not use it on mobile data, and only have this problem when connected to wifi away from home. Am in London next week and will try it in the hotel, however, I am certain I have tried this in the past when I have been away, as it was suggested by someone previously, and did not make any difference. I think it is a Plusnet issue, which they won't admit. Have tried different port settings also, current incoming port is 143. :y

Port 143 is the port used for unencrypted IMAP. If you use this while connected to a publicly accessible wifi it is possible for someone to snoop your I MAP traffic and harvest your login and password.

Port 993 is used for encrypted IMAP but as mentioned before plusnet do not appear to offer encryption

Port 25 is for unencrypted SMTP. It is not safe to use on the publicly accessible Internet hence no Internet provider that knows what they are doing will allow access to it.
Nah, that's mostly tosh I'm afraid.

Pretty much all email servers (lets ignore tinpot ISPs for now, though) allow encrypted SMTP email over 25tcp via TLS.  Obviously, this has to be the case, as the whole internet passes mail between servers on 25tcp, as a mail server has not mechanism to tell the sending server otherwise.

Remember, inter-server traffic is as easy to sniff as client to ISP server traffic, and inter-server traffic will only get encrypted if both sides can agree on a method, else it fails back to the lowest common denominator, plain text. So if really concerned about email security, you need to enforce end to end encryption via strategies like PKI, so its encrypted before the email client processes it. PITA for the recipient though. And even then, the headers are still fair game if the 2 SMTP servers inbetween cannot negotiate encryption.  That's one reason why non SMTP email systems such as X400 remained popular for so long.

The use of other ports such a 465tcp tends to be more for making life easier for the ISP.

Hmm, I must have gone through these settings a dozen times in the past with Plusnet by phone, and have always been told "relay.plus.net" for outgoing! I will try it this weekend when away. :y :y :y

At last I have remembered to try these settings when away from my home wifi, and I am delighted to say by just changing the outgoing server setting to smtp.plus.net I was able to send a message. So thanks very much Chris. :y :y :y However this begs the question as to why no-one at Plusnet over the years I have grumbled, has come up with this setting. >:( >:( >:(

Glad to heat it worked  :y (for now anyway  ;D), just bear in mind when your not on your Home Wifi or Mobile Network, and on A N Other Network you are subject to Plusnets no encryption.  ;)

Which I've done several times. So I plan to leave at the end of current contract. As will be junderstood by the techno able on here, this blog probably explains issues with Plusnet better than I can.

Happy Xmas to all OOFers. :y
