Portrait Mode, drives me Mad!, just about every photo I see or get shown these days is shot in Portrait Mode, I mean there's plenty of clues out there, Cinema, TV's, Computer Screens, two eye's side by side, but no, every one has to hold there phones upright to take a picture.  >:(

Saw one one last night, 6 people trying to cramp their faces together so they would fit in the phones screen in portrait mode, when I suggested turning the phone side ways and take the shot in Landscape Mode, I get a funny look, Doh!, can you do that, wont it come out funny.  ::)

And as for taking Video in Vertical Mode, dont even go there.  :o  :-X

Rant over.  ::)

Yea, of course there are times when portrait mode is required, Effie Tower, Bottle if Wine, Nice chick in a Bikini etc,......  just said the last bit out loud didn't I.

Why is it that you often see videos with large areas on either side blurred, with just the centre in focus?  :-\

It isn't really possible to take a picture upside down with a modern smart-phone as they all have acceleration sensors that tell the phone which way up they are - that information is then saved in the jpeg file.

The problem comes if you try to view a picture using software that isn't standards compliant and incapable of reading a jpeg file correctly (Microsoft seems to be the worst in this regard)

Ive heard a couple of reasons for that, one being its supose to make it more pleasing to the eye, personally I think its a distraction, another reason is if it was left black, some TV's would auto switch from 16:9 to 4:3 Zoom, although I cant see that as the black part would still be transmitted as part of the line?  :-\

Point being if they took the Video correctly in the first place, then there would be no need for it.  ::)

Annoying thing is, and the lastest win10 / Office is a bit like this, if you do accidentally hold the phone upside down and as Andy says the info is saved, even if you rotate and correct the picture afterwards then save that, it can still posts up side down in Word, Excel etc.

Landscape or portrait - wouldn't you need a 10X zoom?   :P

What probably happens is that the vendor opens the photo in windows picture viewer (or whatever they call it at the moment), sees the picture is upside down so rotates it and saves it. Microsoft doesn't update the rotation tag in the jpeg file so you now have a picture that claims to be upside down even though it is the right way up.

Posting upside down is entirely user error as they can be rotated in edit both on the phone/camera and in the host ::)
