Title: Code reading
Post by: BazaJT on 20 June 2018, 07:50:48
As mentioned on my other thread "strange one" I've spoken to a bodyshop with a code reader and they'll read the codes this Saturday.Question is once codes[if any]are read and then cleared-in case they're historic-how soon after clearing would any current codes re-appear?

As soon as the ecu thinks summat is wrong...

Depends on the fault as some will ping up as soon as you start it and dissappear once driven a few miles, others will be the opposite.

It takes several miles for the ecu to relearn after battery disconnect as well, which would cloud the issue somewhat.

Note all the codes, clear them, drive it 30-40 miles, then re read them... Anything left should be current, but be mindful of the above :y

And don't forget that your 3.0l isn't OBD compliant, so will require a more specialist reader to display codes. Which are only a starting point for most diagnostics.

Or just do the paperclip test and save yourself the time and money. ;)

I've got an as yet unused OBD2 code reader and I want to use it to clear the emissions light (waiting until I next see Serek to relocate the lambda sensor), so will it stay cleared forever - or at least long enough for MOT purposes?

Ron.

If it's just the P0420 and 430 codes relating to cat performance, it'll normally take a couple of days' use to come back on, so yes. :y

Thanks Kevin: so forget the Cataclean and clear the codes just before testing time?
It has never failed on emissions before and Shell V-Power. Cataclean plus a spirited drive ahead of MOT has seen me OK, but now I musn't have the EML indicator on, apparently.  ???

I will need to refir the bulb and clear the same code on mine at MOT time. I really should relocate the lamdas one of these days.  ::)

Yes, EML is now a fail. (mental note to fix the knackered post-cat sensor on mine)  :-[

Emissions was never an issue as the second larger cat always cleans things up. It's the smaller pre-cats that cause the problem.

I'm not convinced cataclean isn't snake oil, TBH.

Clear the codes before setting off to the MOT and you should be fine. For a permanent fix, relocate the lambda sensors. :y

Not on an Omega v6 (and I don't think on the 4 pots either) ;)

The only way to reset the BLMs with a bog standard reader is to put on an artificial fault to get the EML lit, and then clear those codes - that resets BLMs as well.

Bear in mind that car in question is lightly used with the battery disconnected for long periods iirc :y

You are correct in your thinking DG car is indeed lightly used-although of late it's been getting more use in part at least to get some of my moneys worth back that I spent getting it M.o.T.'d.The code reading by the bodyshop will be f.o.c. in a favour for a favour way,so will give that a go and see if anything comes to light :y
