I have some UV dye ordered. Where is the best place to look to see if it is the oil cooler plate or the coolant bridge seals? As I cannot see any drips, or patches of wet on the ground under the car.

Thanks

Use an inspection mirror and a torch. You can get them a lot cheaper.

Sorry for all the questions, would i be looking down the back of the plenum area from the top of engine, or from under the car?

Thanks

For coolant leaks a cheaper and easier method than UV dye and torches is simply bright yellow food colouring ! Stick a decent amount in the tank and run the engine .. the  bright yellow is easily seen with the naked eye, and it tends to dry to a solid "streak" enabling leaks to be spotted quite easily .. also flushes out/washes off easily when the problem is solved  :)

I had a lead a few years ago - was the oil cooler plate.  Used to drip at the back of the bell housing and drip off the very bottom where there are a couple of bolts. Only did it when started to cool down after 20 mins or so (assumption being some things stayed warmer for longer !)

Clean up and new gasket/seal and jobs a good en, with new Dowty washers just in case.

Hope you get it sorted.

Thanks for all the help. Gives me places to start looking.  Isn't liquid food colourant derived from petroleum, a crude oil product, which also happens to be used in gasoline, diesel fuel, asphalt, and tar? So is it still ok to put say maybe 2-3 small bottles of a bright yellow in the coolant system? As said I do have the UV dye on its way, but am happy to throw some food dye in aswell for good measure.

Not quite a full bottle, nicked it from the wife's larder :) dissolved in a bit of hot water first, emptied the header tank, filled it, ran engine until the thermostat opened at which point my leak was instantly obvious, a tiny split in a hose, the yellow oozing out was obvious. Since used the same technique on an HBV, a leaking radiator and a leaking heater matrix (not all my cars though!) .. the heater matrix only became obvious when the passenger carpet started to show an ominous yellow stain .......   :)

roughly between 4 to 6 pints. Hot weather it needs more.

'Kin 'Ell Addy  :o :o :o   . . . thought a leak like that would be visible . :o :o :o

Also my advice NOT to start buying parts until you know what the problem is.

Dye method should see you right in locating it  . . . :y :y :y

Plenum, inlet manifold and sandwich plate off to access them. Use the dye first though as it will save a lot of possibly needless aggro.

Alnico Blue, I know it is alot, I am assuming due to no signs of any coolant on the floor that it is just evapourating on something hot?

I am not buying anything until I hopefully can find the problem, just looking at price of stuff.

If it's a leaking HBV, look under the car. I have had several fail, and got a drip every 2 or 3 seconds. It only leaks when system is hot and pressurised, and in the leaky setting (MAX or MIN). If set in AUTO it will leak irregularly.
