Title: Different attitudes?
Post by: BazaJT on 07 November 2018, 18:33:17
Watched a programme today about WW1 and it spoke of a daylight air raid on London in 1917.One bomb went through the roof of a school it passed through the top floor killing a little girl as it went passing through the second floor it killed a little boy and went on to explode on the ground floor killing a further 16.According to the head teachers log book this happened shortly before noon and the school was closed for the rest of the day, however the school was open the very next morning and life continued on.If that were to happen today the school would be shut for days, there'd be masses of flowers at least one candle lit vigil and the rest of the pupils offered counselling. Is this different attitudes or different circumstances?

Therehave been some interesting progs on the box .

The suffering and individual stories are very humbling.I know it isnt very IN to talk about the past but that generation and another in the second world war. They did us proud.

With this new job, i'm working with a bunch of 19 year olds amongst others  ::)
Listening to the poor little darlings moan and whine about how hard life is quite frankly, hilarious  ;D
Seriously, the slightest thing happens and they go into total meltdown  ;D ;D

And for gods sake, just stand back and watch them if somebody doesn't like there selfies in a morning or somebody says something they don't like on the internet  ::)
Talk about the end of the friggin world .................  ;D ;D ;D :D :D :D

I saw that, and also quite a few more that the BBC have been showing. Some really good programmes.  Certainly today's snowflake generation wouldn't have coped too well with that. Unfortunately I doubt if any of them are watching these programmes.:y

Everyone always puts down the younger generation but it really does seem this current crop are absolute moronic mouth breathers. No personality’s, no real interests. Just shit excuses for humans.

There are plenty of respectable, and respectful young people about, they just don't make it on to the news. Personally, I'm not that surprised that they don't show an interest in a war that happened a hundred years ago, it's ancient history to them.

It's a fair point Uncle STEMO.

It's not long until both of the 20th centuries world wars will have passed from living memory and it's not like we commemorate the Napoleonic Wars.  :-\

Two Steve's are correct....today's youth have no real connection with WW1 and WW2. They may hear bits in the family, but its usually to do with people they have never met, and only hear about once in a blue moon. I expect most of us have distant relatives that fought in the Boer war, and many other campaigns, but I only know  of my late immediate family's connections with WW1 and WW2. Anyone else in the family, and any other war, I know diddly squat about, and to be frank, I am not interested. But on saying that, I still respect any if they did partake............but it is all in the past :(

In the 1880's to 1890's when WWI soldiers were typically born, it was a very different world with much harder, shorter lives then. Typically married at 20, with about 25% of women in the family way before the day and they had typically 4 to 8 kids, 1 or 2 would typically die in childhood, doctors were largely quacks. Hard manual work, poor diet and whole families often malnourished. Men went to work, women ran the house & household. Tin bath in front of the fire in the winter once a week, with the rest of the house unheated. Working clothes Monday to Saturday & Sunday best on Sunday and church. Candles, or if you were the lucky rich with gas lighting, in an evening, so life revolved much more round daylight No radio & no TV. 98% of males in WWI smoked. Transport was trains, horses & horse drawn busses or walking when you were born, but motor vehicle and bicycles were becoming common by WWI.

Communities were strong, where life was easier and better if you looked after each other and taking responsibility and doing your family chores started young. Social security was the very last resort Poor Laws and parish workhouses.

This century has seen the general trend of all of us progressively having less muscle and more fat, wealth, creature comforts, vaccinations, modern medicines and operations. Industrialization has progressed from the coal fired mechanical steam age to the gas and petroleum one, to electricity, electrical machines and finally into the electronics and computing era. Communications have changed from telegraph, to telephone, radio, television and cell phones.

The pace of political, technological and social change has been getting faster and in some ways going in a circle where working class wealth peaked in the 1970s and has been squeezed since the launch of the IBM PC in the 1980s for the unskilled and semi-skilled. The middle class have just about held their own with the winners being the in demand highly skilled, technologists, technocrats, creative industries, entrepreneurs and other business owners and of course the elites. 1990's onwards globalization has produced and abundance of much cheaper food and goods.

It is easy to blame the kids but like us they will find their way in life and have many challenges with many of them very different for each generation. As we age we all live through more, learn more and have more life experiences. Where each generation has been on this planet less time than each older generation, you can't expect them to know as much and much that they do is very different to us.

Try explaining to a 17 yesr old that his parents telling him to go to college and not skive, isn't threatening or bullying, just parenting. And no, the police won't get involved on your side...

Yes, I watched that.  It is a well known incident in historian circles because it involved the civilian population, as did other earlier bombing raids by Zeppelins and Gotha aircraft, one of which was responsible for this loss of 18 children.  An interesting, and very important fact came into play after this raid in June 1917.  The Royal Family was the German House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, so an anti Royal movement was asking how British is the Royal Family, with even the name of the feared German bomber.  In July 1917 King George V changed the family name to Windsor and stopped the regular use of the German language within the Royal households, which had been the norm.

As for the 'limited' reaction, for us now, over the horrific school bombing, it must be seen in context, a crucial element that should come into any historical discussion; by June 1917 the British public had become numbed by the tremendous rates of British casualties.  They had suffered a constant stream of news about the horrendous losses, including those associated to the Battle of the Somme, and especially to the first day on the 1st July 1916, when 10,000 were killed in the morning, almost another 10,000 in the afternoon.  Another 40,000 were wounded, of which many would die of their wounds later.

Now, in that context the 18 school children is a terrible loss, especially to us now, but to the general population then................a mere blip on the fantastic, and still growing, number of losses, which would be up to 772,000 British deaths by 11/11/1918. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

God may we never forget!!!!

Some of todays generation are undoubtedly a woosy bunch of morons, but by no means all.
It seems that terrible situations being out the best in British people, which has been demonstrated when we have terrorist attrocites and suchlike, when people seem to pull together and suddenly rediscover a sense of community to help those affected.
