Hi all, this is a continuation of my previous post from March this year

Since this post, and TB finding nothing wrong, the light has come on again. The smells I thought were oil, turns out to be water from leaks under the scuttle.
Chris found rusty water in the plug wells. It has NOT come from the engine, as the water level is constant full. New dis packs have been purchased but not yet fitted.
Old ones damaged.
Now...the spanner light. When Chris picked the car up, he said the light came on, when going slow, and went into limp mode. On restart, no light. I have come down to Dorset, car ran a dream. I have done nearly 200 miles, but yesterday, I had to stop on a hill in Corfe. When I was able to carry on, the car stayed in low gear, revs hit the roof, then a big jump as it changed up, and the spanner light came on. It drove ok to Swanage. On restart, it performed as though nothing had happened, no light and is still ok.
Chris said he was going very slow uphill, and my situation was the same. On torturing the wife for earlier details, it seems its the 'slow' is the common denominator.
Chris thinks, possibly a sump off job/service, which it could probably do with. Any other ideas or similar experience. There is no noise from the box, and changes are normal (imo)

Check the fluid level, and if normal, swap the box over.
Try to do it reasonably soon, else you will be in the swap box for certain.

I assume you are meaning change the gearbox !!!!! Way out of my league :( :(

The problem these days is finding a good used AR35 as they nearly all have plenty of miles on them.
I think RobseyMV6 might have a couple still.

Thanks for the replies. I know you chaps know more than me. But what is causing it. Since the light came on the other day, and went out as normal after restart, It has behaved perfectly again. There has to be a reason. How can a fault disappear for two/three years then pop up again, then disappear again. :(

Oh...btw, the car has done 79,000 miles (gently driven) :y

What engine and is it auto or manual?
You mentioned that you have codes P01700 & P0500. Any others?
Was the speedometer steady when the fault occurred? P0500 suggests a fault with the vehicle speed sensor.

Was there a brief feeling of neutral and/or a thud just before it changed up?

Its either low fluid or a worn box. Using it with low fluid will quickly wear the box.

No problems with speedo. There was a thump when it eventually changed up. It sticks in the low gear, revs hit the roof, then it leapt forward. After stopping, restarting, all has returned to normal. Gearbox oil was changed by James after it happened three years ago. Mileage since is a very few thousand, under ten.

The codes were obtained by pedal trick, which I now know were engine codes as I don’t think pedal trick does gearbox. These were cleared and probably historic, as nothing wrong engine wise

Sounds like it could be a lazy 1-2 or 2-3 solenoid, they live under the small gearbox sump and are easily changed, from memory they are held in with a couple of roll pins

Checking the ATF level, using the correct method, is definitely the first course of action. If your lucky, a litre of ATF will cure the problem.
I had the same issue with my first Omega, but by the time I got the car and found OOF for advice, the box was Donald.
£40 for a box from ebay, a days work, and a permanent scar on my hand was all it cost.

Pretty sure it's the larger gearbox sump that the solenoids live under. That part of the box is the 3 speed part, the fourth is the bit they bolted on the front with the small sump.

My 02 MV6 was doing this by about 10k miles - random 'missed' change from 2-3, high revs and sometimes a thump which brought on the spanner and limp mode. This was 2004, but from memory, codes were not much use. They seemed to pick up errors resulting from the problem but not the cause.
Vauxhall replaced various electronic bits to no effect. John Mackie in Glasgow found a misaligned internal seal (IDK what, but solenoid rings a faint bell) which they suspected may have been in there from the factory. It's now 51k miles and the fault has never repeated.
It was a gearbox-out fix (on VX warranty thankfully) but someone else might know if the part can be done by the sump.

Sorry no update, still away from home, but car running well at the moment :y
