Cracked windscreen writes car off.

This car appears to be uneconomical to repair as windscreen is cracked. Can this be so?

The windscreen doesn’t appear to be the problem, corrosion around the area where it sits does. Or, at least, fear of corrosion around that area.

Scuttle appears to have been removed... wiper position is off and screen lower trim is missing :-\

That said crack doesn't start in the corner which is where they actually rust, and rest of car is very clean...

Two caveats...

1. reg is covered up, so no MoT history.
2. either boot is open or it's been whacked up the arse.

Worth a punt at that money.

Maybe close up you can see the extent of the corrosion with that lower trim off.  :-\

I expect he tried to replace his windscreen through his insurance, who sent Autoglass out, and the man walked way once he took the trim off.  ;)

Well spotted, Doc. As you say, the car looks very clean otherwise, and jolly cheap. MOT till February, and no advisories last test. Helston is in Cornwall, home of the Floral Dance, the wife tells me.

It shouldnt write the car off. He can get someone to weld in new metal to replace the rust, and then start again with the windscreen replacement.

Given that he's hidden the Reg No I'd treat that with caution.  ;)  If you're interested, message him and ask for the Reg No so that you can check the MOT history and if he declines or dosn't answer you, I'd forget it.  ::)

My Uncle and Auntie live in Helston and it is indeed the home of the Floral Dance.  :y

Get your new welder out Terry. even if the screen hasn't cracked because of rust, if you don't deal with what you find the next one will. Fortunately it's not a difficult place to work on.

Recent post in General Car Chat, 'Bloody wind', by Chazza12, explains this item. Apparently Auto Glass men refuse to replace windscreens if there is corrosion in the screen surround until it is welded up. A private windscreen job costs over £200, so the above car, auction ending today and current bid £260, would cost me over £500 to get back on the road, plus collection costs.
