Good place to pick up 12V IGN under hood
« on: 20 March 2018, 15:28:25 »

I'm about to rewire my fog lamps to be running lights. For this to work I need to pick up 12V IGN power some where in the harness that doesn't inflict to much on other things. On GM cars it is usually pink wires that are hot under ignition.

See my diagram on my idea on how to wire this with two relays.

Thanks

Firstly, the switched ignition feeds in an Omega are normally black wires. A useful place to pick this up would be in the ECU box under the bonnet where you could get hold of a couple more relay sockets and add your new relays here. Ignition switched feed is available at pins 86 and 30 of K60, the air conditioning compressor relay, at several of the engine cooling fan relays and also pin 3 of the cooling fan test socket. Black coloured wire in all cases.

But.. I'm not sure what you are trying to achieve here. The circuit you present doesn't look correct to me. If you want to fog lights to come on with ignition on, then why not just feed them with a single relay fed from ignition power? What behaviour do you want?

Also, my feeling is that fog lights are too bright to use as running lights as they have 55W bulbs with uncontrolled beams. I'd put 10W bulbs in for this purpose, but then they'd be useless as fog lights.  ;)

Thanks for the info.

Reason for my schematic with the relays is that in Sweden, where I'm located, you are not allowed to have running lights or fog lights on at the same time as your low beam. I have even got a ticket for this once  >:(

So what this schematic does is that when you turn on your lights the feed to the parking lights will turn of the running lights/fog lights and you have to turn them on with the switch on your dash if you want them on. In other words it will behave as it does from factory when parking lights are on.

I will use LED's that are about the same as 35W bulbs and it will work for me, we don't have that much fog up here in Scandinavia but a lot of snow.  :)

thanks

UK regulations forbid the use of fog lights in any conditions other than in fog (logical!) and/or falling snow. Is that the same for Sweden?

OK. In that case I think you've drawn the contacts on the relay with changeover contacts the wrong way round. The common pin should be connected to the fog lamps.

Other than that, it should work. Remember to ensure that the feed from 12V is adequately fused. :y

Did he pull himself over, issue himself with a stern warning and demand that he produce his documents at the local Nick?

Doesnt look right to me either, unless what your trying to achieve is to use the Parking Light Relay as an Interrupter to the Fog Light feed, in which case your need to wire it differently......

........or am I just reading the reason for it all wrong.  :-\

Yes the SNAFU is on me, the diagram is corrected and updated.

I have done the same thing on a couple of US GM cars and had misplaced the diagrams I had then, this was just drawn from memory.

I was going to suggest retrofitting the fog/running light assemblies from the face lift Catera, assuming that your car is also a face lift, that way you get two lamps in the fog light position...

Hmm, interesting. Aren't they hard to get?

Also, if you are fitting LED lights, I wouldn't bother with the relay on the 12V feed. Just wire the switched 12V to the second relay contacts via a fuse as the LED bulbs will draw negligible current.

You are suggesting that I connect the feed to one of the black wires directly as per your first reply. The ones  I have pulls 0.31A each which might be workable as you suggest.

Here are the ones I have got:

Yep, that level of load will be negligible so might as well simplify the setup. :y
