It's quite telling of the state of our public transport system when you can make calculations like that! 90 quid on the train versus 111 quid in fuel to go in a 3 litre car. Granted, there are other expenses involved in the car option but most are fixed whether you drive it or not and fuel is the major one.

Is it really surprising that people don't use public transport more?

I'd say more like 400 per tank, TBH.

At 30 to the gallon you'll get 430 miles from 65 litres leaving 10 litres left in the tank, so not "on vapours". That's about 67 quid :o

'kinnel this petrol's gettin expensive. Must stop doing calculations like that.  :o

LPG would probably be about 800 quid to DIY using the kit we fitted to James' car plus a tank.

What a plonker!

I wonder what it'll take to get some people off their mobiles!

I guess a law is nothing without enforcement.

True. And on reflection one would not expect a successful conviction for
causing death by careless driving unless the driver was found to be wholly or substantially responsible for the accident in the first place.

This one is actually about causing death by careless driving, somewhat different to causing death by dangerous driving. However, the distinction is very unclear, and a grieving relative would no doubt be justified in expecting a custodial sentence for either.
We have all taken our eyes off the road for a few seconds, and if that is the time a child chooses to step out, then we are all potential killers.
The law is not such an ass as we like to think.

.. and it's not always the driver's fault! I can understand grieving relatives  wanting the harshest sentences. I can't imagine what they go through but, at the end of the day, if you step out in front of a car you can't rely on the driver seeing you and it's not necessarily his fault if he doesn't.

If he loses control and mounts the pavement, doesn't see a pedestrian crossing, etc. then it's a different matter.

The TD is on Avon ZZ3 on rear (bloody hopeless) and some crap budget on front.

I didn't find the ZZ3 too bad on the back of the Elite  ::)
Yeah, but you didn't have "Tractor Power" TM

You mean he doesn't get stuck in his own furrows due to lack of nobbly tyres?
 ;)

i think Bathwick charge about £25 for tracking....

It's camber that's the problem, though, so it will need a full geometry setup. The limits on the machines are really wide and the best setting for your car will be somewhere between those limits. Mine was within limits but ate a set of fronts in 12K. If the guy setting it up doesn't have the experience with Omegas he will likely see that they're all in the green and adjust nothing, or he'll adjust them to "somewhere in the green" which could make matters better or worse :(

I found Dunlops increased road noise slightly over the Primacys that were on the car when I got it.

It's a possibility I could use my parents place. They are going away in Feb  / March time IIRC. They have garage space for 3 cars and parking off the road for plenty more. Located between Reading and Newbury. I will ask the question.

I have a V6 cam belt kit as James said, and I'd be happy to contribute it and my limited experience with Omega cam belts to whatever takes place.

I'd also be happy to host one at home but parking is a bit of an issue.

even mid range gennys need a filter/stabiliser.

You need one with a bit more of a flywheel and an engine that runs OK at several combinations of speed and load, not just one.

The radio club have a nice 5kVA diesel that will throw you across the field if you don't give it a bit of respect when staring, but then it'll just plod along happily for days on end, even with some very unfriendly loads.

Problem is it weighs a ton so we normally end up with some poxy little Honda petrol job cos no-one can be bothered to shift the decent one.

Tempted to buy a bloody generator, stuff those tossers

He He. My Dad bought one for 49.99 the other day ::)

2 stroke petrol, about 700 watts output IIRC. Put a bulb on it and the output was up and down like a yo-yo. Needed about 500 watts of load before it stabilised. You get what you pay for.

With a 100 quid monthly leccy bill you need to set up a little CHP scheme. Then you could have the house heated for free in the winter, and a hot tub in the garden for Post-cam belt do relaxation in the summer :y

It's normally there as small print on the bottom of a bill or other communication, hidden away so you don't notice it.

I think I'm with Scottish Power at the moment (Online Energy Dual Fuel). Still seems to be the cheapest give or take a few quid.

They have been OK (inasmuch as they haven't tried to fleece me). The only DD increase they did make was a reasonable one.

On Friday npower announced an average increase of 17.2 per cent in gas and 12.7 per cent in electricity bills. On certain regional tariffs the increase was as high as 27 per cent.

Time to wander over to uSwitch.com I think.
