One for the Diesel experts.
« on: 14 December 2019, 18:44:37 »

As Ive mentioned elsewhere Airfix 1 (aka clit 1.5 dci) is giving me trouble. It is very difficult to start and sometimes wont start at all. Fault code is low fuel pressure. Ive done some investigation and the main piece of evidence so far has been revealed by testing the amount of fuel coming from each leak off pipe.
With the engine running for a minute or two a small amount of fuel comes from three of the pipes which I have extended for the test, and collects in containers. The fourth one had a lot of fuel coming from the pipe and collected about twenty times more fuel than the other three combined.
To me, this suggests that injector may be stuck closed / inoperative so no fuel is being used by it.
Ive collected the fuel from the filter and it had a small amount of what looked like dirt in it, but didn't appear to be metallic, which is one piece of good news I hope.
Any opinions guys ?
Tia.

is there a 5th cold start injector ? or is that later models? 2009 onwards ?
as one injector is returning much more with a leak off test , it does sound like a problem
but what is it like when up and running ? surely if that injector was blocked .....
it would miss fire like Yank with an itchy trigger finger   :P

It is a 2009 model. No 5th cold start injector afaik, and I would imagine it should be pretty obvious if it had one ?
Once running it seems to run reasonably well, especially once above tickover. Which of course puts a lot of doubt on my non operative injector theory.
Ideally I would like to get it plugged into Renault CLIP diagnostics, but don't know of anywhere local to get that done.
Injectors are anything but cheap, and need to be coded to the engine when insttalled, so Im not going to rush into replacing one on a hunch.

Cold Start Injector picture   :-\

the one "blocked"leak back fail injector does sound duff from what i gather
is there someone local that could refurb just that one  :-\ about £50 ,save having to re-code to the car
or is part of the coding to adjust metering to that injector  :-\
clip is available sub £100
bad time to get such a job done, someone said it's Christmas soon  :o
maybe park Cl-Eeyore up and use the Omega for a few weeks years  ;D

Havent noticed one, but will check again. Its so crowded under the bonnet its hard to tell what half the stuff is
Refurbing might be a good solution, will do a bit of local research.
Pretty sure the sub £100 Clips are Chinese copies, not sure I would trust them tbh.
It has been parked up for the last week and the mighty Mig has been pressed into regular service until its fixed.
£8 a day in petrol to go to work though, is hitting the wallet hard.

All four injectors should have minimal leak off and all should be about the same, seems that you have one that leaking back what more so I'd start by replacing that

they will all be made in china, just depends on how fully populated the PCBs are  ;)
Plugged into crappy French electrics ,what could possibly go wrong  ???

It may soon end up looking like that if it pisses me off much more.
Three of them did indeed have minimal leak off, so its seems logical to assume my problem lies in the fourth one. Will give the place at Langham a call tomorrow and see what the possibilities are for repairing it.
I could get it ultrasound cleaned easily enough, but I imagine the problem is probably going to be more involved than that.
Can buy a used one from ebay for not much money, but its the coding to the engine that might then make it expensive, so need to research and weigh up options.

have you resistance tested ,and confirmed voltage on start up of the glow plugs ?
sorry , I can't remember what you have done so far  :-[
i know it's sod all to do with the leak off on the duff injector ,
ultra sonic cleaning could possibly clean the pintles  ,not sure it would solve the leak back problem
speaking to an injector specialist is probably wise and free   :)

New set of Bosch glow plug a month or so ago. After they were fitted it started from cold within a couple of seconds. Then a week ago it suddenly started to take a very long time to start, hence the investigations. Im confident the glow plug side of things is ok.
Also, no sign of a fifth, cold start injector, and the starting problem is present even when the engine is hot.
Need to sort the obvious problem with this injector and hopefully all will be ok again - until next time. Interweb seems to agree with Fuse 19. Engine (or the bits attached to it) is an unreliable dog. Once it starts giving trouble it tends to become a habit.
My problem is that I need an economical car for commuting and a dire shortage og Wonga prevents buying something newer or more expensive.
Im thinking the way forward is to buy a used injector, and assuming the car then runs ok, take it to an injection specialist to have it coded for optimum running.
Then look at the possibility of getting rid and replace with something else - but what ? Buying a 10 year old car is always going to carry the possibility of buying a heap of someone else trouble.

we have 2 on the fleet ,
1 2006 estate in 18 months it's had a split rad hose ,replaced from my spares bin .
1 2007 hatch ,needed an alternator ,cambelt, waterpump when we got it ,been fine since
it's an old isuzu engine design ,parts are cheap

most cars for sale sub 1k will have issues ,that's why they are for sale
shop around for a 100k miles or less ,sub £1k with good MOT history
